When we received Giles Chapman’s latest book we thoroughly enjoyed the short bios and interesting stories that comprised Three Million Miles in a Volvo and other Curious Car Stories These are just perfect for the VeloceToday format, we thought, jealousy. I wonder if Giles might let us use a few of his stories in VT?
But Giles is truly a well-known and accomplished author, TV and radio personality and journalist. I checked his website. He wrote: I’m a UK-based contributing writer and interviewer for newspapers, magazines and websites. I am the author of some 55 published books on diverse car-related subjects, and I work with publishers as an experienced and trusted consultant. In addition, I’m a regular broadcast contributor on BBC radio and TV channels. I am also called upon frequently as a ‘talking head’ for documentaries and entertainment shows. I’ve been closely involved in heritage and awards projects for the Royal Automobile Club in London, and work for a variety of other luxury and media brands.
Do you really think he’d allow VeloceToday to publish chapters from his book? Nothing ventured nothing gained, so I asked. And he said yes, we could use six of his stories from the book. And he added, “I do love your work and how you present it.” That made our day!
Now all we had to do was to select six from the fifty in the book, no small task as they were all compelling and so well written. We begin this week with the story of Walter Lines and his company. I didn’t know who Walter Lines was, but found out that we had a connection that our readers might share as well. This is the charm of the book, and btw, there is a very nice chapter on Mary Davis, done with a little help from Willem Oosthoek.
