And How! Goodwood Members Meeting

March 20, 2018 By pete

Letters and photos from Jonathan Sharp on the occasion of the Goodwood Members Meeting

Tuesday March 13

Pete,
The Goodwood 76th Members meeting is taking place this coming weekend. I have purchased a weekend ticket and hopefully will be attending.

I have just seen the entry list and it is very good. The big problem will probably be the weather. Whilst the past few days have been a bit more spring like by the weekend the temps are dropping to only a few degrees above zero and we may even get snow!

So assuming I am able to attend, and it is of interest, can I have a slot in VeloceToday.com for the 27th March?

Thursday March 15

The weather for this Saturday at Goodwood…snow, wind chill factor -6. oh crumbs.

Friday March 16

My pal has just returned from a meeting at Goodwood. The Duke of Richmond has 3 snow ploughs and gritters on stand by for the week end. I have heard of races starting behind the pace car but never behind a snow plough!

Saturday March 17

Just back from day one, Blooming freezing, blizzard at one point but the snow did not settle at sea level though somebody was seen sking on Trundle Hill which is just up from the circuit. All the practice and racing for the cars took place but the bike practice was cancelled as it was snowing at the time.

It is supposed to snow heavily overnight so not sure if I will be able to attend tomorrow but I think I have enough shots in the can to be able to do something.

Type 35 may be objecting to being taken to the grid.

Sunday March 18

Here is a shot I took during yesterday’s blizzard. It snowed overnight and the weather man tells us to expect more so my pal and I decided not to attend day two. We must be getting old but it took me several hours sitting in the lounge with the heating on and wrapped up in a duvet (down comforter) to get warm last night, and it is not much warmer sitting here typing this!

I am watching the live streaming from the event. The hills around the circuit are snow covered but the track is clear. The crowd looks very very cold.

I promise to send you more by next week when the camera thaws out.In the meantime, here are a few more shots:

Alfa Romeo 6C 2300 Millie Miglia Spider, Touring, Pierre Mellinger

Daniel Ghose’s 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Zagato.

Blower Bentley, Martin Overington

But the show must go on…Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza Max and Moritz Werner.

Lovely photos as always ,I think the oil in the Bugatti was so cold its owner didn’t have the arm power to crank it over 😉

Many years ago there was another snowy Members Meeting. A friend was racing his Lotus 11. After a couple of experimental laps he upped the pace. Adjusting his rear view mirror on the Lavant straight and received a 100 mph snowball! We retired to a local pub….
