And That Was the Way it Was: F1 in 1971-2

August 21, 2023 By pete

McLaren parts. Silverstone, British GP, 1971. The car, driven by Peter Gethin, DNF when the engine blew. A rare instance of the Cosworth-Ford engine failing.

Story and photos by Charley Seavey

Many years ago, getting near the pits and/or paddock was much easier. Earlier I’ve recounted my story about getting into the pits at Zandvoort in 1962 and sitting in Bruce McLaren’s Cooper. Most of these shots are from ten years later. The pictures you see are all scans of b&w prints I made at the time when I had access to a nice well equipped darkroom. Unfortunately I made no notes as to what and where, so all the identifications below are mostly subject to debate. I arrived at location largely by basing visible car numbers on races I was pretty sure I had attended at the time. I’ve noted where I’m not sure of what we’re looking at. If anybody knows, please comment.
