February means Carnevale to Italians the world over and in South Australia it’s no different. Held indoors once again at the Adelaide Showgrounds, the summer sun couldn’t daunt the annual festival of Italian culture held February 6th-7th. Style on wheels never fails to attract attention and Italian machinery is always a popular drawcard. The local Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Ferrari and Maserati importer, Prestige Formula, had current models on show to contrast with the impressively turned out classics. The traditional auction that is held yearly at the Retromobile by Bonhams included about 50 lots of memorabilia and about 100 cars; most of the cars presented were French, with few Italian, English, German and American.
The quality of the cars was high, but without really “high end” cars: only five had an estimation of over half a million of euros (a Ferrari Superamerica, an Alfa 8C, an Alfa Castagna, a Fiat 8V and a Maserati A6G 1500) and none of them sold.
The result of the auction has been in line with the economic world moment. About 60% of the cars that have been sold were good bargains for the buyers. Top prices were 475.000 euros for an Hispano Suiza of 1935, about 400.000 euros for a Mercedes Benz 630K of 1929 and a Swiss Monteverdi Hai 450SS of 1970.
Please note that all the prices mentioned below are inclusive of the buyer’s premium.
