Story and photos by Allen R. Kuhn
This photographer thinks Daniel Sexton Gurney to be one of the greatest of all drivers and constructors who ever turned a steering wheel or flew with the Eagles. There are so many fine books and articles about Dan I will leave his full background for others to chronicle. I will stick to my personal interaction with him and include photos of his career between 1956 and 1965.
The next set of photos are all from the Shelby Cobra free-for-all at Riverside on October 13, 1963. What was the finishing order? See last photo in grouping.
And a couple more, these from the heyday of the 1960s.
Now for some photographs of the people I have met along the way while photographing Dan and so many other world-class drivers.
Thank you if you got this far. I hope you enjoyed the journey as much as I did. And thank you Pete for letting me go overboard on the number of pictures this time. It was for a great cause, extolling the virtues of one Daniel Sexton Gurney.

* A personal aside. I donated two 20X30 prints of Shelby racing for the auction that benefits the Petersen. First item up was a 4X6 foot cloth print of one of Dave Freidman’s photographs. It went for $1,800. This was now an OMG (oh-my-god) moment for me. I sold my 20X30 for $150. I was ready to crawl under the table. When they opened the bidding at $500, I felt good. I felt wonderful when it passed $1,800 and ecstatic when it sold for $2,400. The other did better at $2,700. All proceeds to the Petersen of course. All satisfaction to ME. It is amazing what some adult beverages can do when two guys want to bid for the same item. I saw the gentleman carrying the prints after the event and thanked him for getting them. He then asked me to sign both, on the front too. Life was good.

I enjoyed Allen’s photos as always. Dan was one of the best but beyond that he was a real gentleman and a genuine good guy. I enjoyed his sense of humor. In the 1961 Sebring 12 Hours, he shared a factory Type 718 RS61 with Jo Bonnier. He autographed a photo I took of him and the Porsche zipping through The Esses with the inscription, “Jeff, How do you like my VW?”

I love these pictures. The first race I attended with my Dad was the Santa Barbara race in your first pic. I went home with a bad sunburn and a splinter in my nose from peering through the snow fence – loved it anyway and It lit a fire in me that still burns.
One question, tho: isn’t the car leading Gurney in his Speedster the Jag (later Chev) special driven by Don Hullette??

Wonderful collection of photos! Thanks for sharing them.

Allen, thanks for creating these photos, preserving them, and now sharing them with new generations. Shooting film with those old cameras was never easy–no autofocus, no zoom lenses, no motor drives–so these photos truly demonstrate your skills!
Willem Oosthoek says
Great pictures, Allen, but that Cunnigham-entered Genie is a Mk 10.
John Shea says
I had the opportunity to have lunch with Mr Gurney at Lime Rock in 1988. He was gracious enough to answer my million questions. Afterwards I was amazed about how much time he spent talking about the people who were no longer around from these years. He never spoke about his accomplishments but about those he admired. Extremely gracious individual.

Jeff Allison – Always nice to read your comments, Jeff. I also enjoy putting these together. I doubt anyone will be able to capture his true essence though.
Many Thanks Allen

Web Beadle – Glad I could spark your great feelings, Web. Yes, Don Hullette did drive it later. It was originally built by Bill Pickford as the Pickford Special in the early ‘50s. I first saw it at Torrey Pines in January 1956, the third race I went to. A picture I took of Woodward got me really hooked on shooting sports cad racing when I won a prize in the Eastman Kodak National High School Photo Contest.

John Lacko – Glad you like them, John. I’m always happy to contribute my archives to Pete through Velocetoday.com

Frank Barrett – And don’t forget a key one, NO endless shooting. Shoot 38 exposures then stop the race, I have to reload. A very well-known automotive photographer, Winston Goodfellow, once told me the exact same thing.
Many thanks, Allen
ALLEN KUHN says
Willem Oosthoek – Oh, Willem I strongly acquiesce to your identifying it as a MK 10. My usual source had it as a MK 8. They a very accurate with the amount of data they display. But that’s the internet for you. The watch word there is, “With a grain of salt.”
Many Thanks, Allen
ALLEN KUHN says
John Shea – They don’t make them like Dan anymore, John.
Thanks for sharing your story. Allen

Hi Mr. Kuhn – great photos as usual. My dad and I loved Riverside and trucked up there often from Escondido. Unfortunately, we missed the U. S. Grand Prix in 1960 (of course the LA Times titled all the races as the Times Grand Prix). We particularly liked Lew Spencer and what he could with his Morgan Plus 4 Super Sports. Dan Gurney of course was an amazingly versatile driver and could win in everything, but by body type he wasn’t as well suited to the 1.5 litre GP cars as, say Jim Clark.
ALLEN KUHN says
Jim Sitz- Thanks, Jim I appreciate your kind words. Yes, here will never be another Dan.

An email to me from Kathy Weida former Vice President of All American Racers upon seen this story.
Thank you for sharing the view from your front row seat Allen. Good stuff!!!
Best always,
Kathy
Thank you Kathy for letting me share this, Allen

Paul House – Your thoughts always appreciated, Paul. I was a little skeptical when I looked it the 2 1/4 color slide. Kodak Ektachrome film has a tendency to add a little magenta to itself. But, Ol’ doc Kuhn was able to save it and bring it back to life.
Thanks Paul

Mark Guinther – Glad you like my work, Mark. Good for your Dad. Yes, I too loved Riverside, except for the heat, the wind, nothing to drink, and the 2 mile walk from Turn 6 back to the pits. But they usually put on a great show, regardless of what they called it. Lew could always get the utmost from the Baby Dolls. If you think Dan in a 1.5 litre GP car a tight, he shared a ride with two women at Sebring in a Fiat Abarth. Small, the top of mine came up to my bellybutton. In a rollover you wouldn’t have to worry about hitting the top of the roof, you are the top of the roof. Thanks Mark
