After the GT2, GT3 and Challenge versions of the 458, on 18 July, at the Fiorano circuit, debuted the Ferrari 458 Italia Grand Am, a model name one is more likely to remember, if in fact it becomes official nomenclature.

Based on the GT3 version of the Italia and destined for the U.S. Grand Am North American series, it was built in collaboration with Michelotto Cars of Padua, Italy,

The 458 Grand Am is equipped with a V8 with 500cv, but uses a less efficient aerodynamic configuration than that used in the GT championships in Europe. The engine, according to the regulations, is equipped with a 48 mm flange intake restriction and reaches a maximum speed of 8000 rpm. Also as required by regulations, the 458 Grand Am lacks the ABS and traction control, as well as being equipped with a new roll bar with stronger side protection.

Maurizio Mediani sits down for a serious session with the 458 Italia Grand Am.

The 458 Grand Am is equipped with Continental tires, the sole supplier of the series and, as required by regulation, will use a different tire than the harder compound tires normally used in European competitions. In testing, Maurizio Mediani and Jaime Melo and covered a total of 45 trouble free laps earlier this month.

The 458 Italy Grand Am was submitted to a private testing session, scheduled on the circuit of the Daytona International Speedway, Florida, on 26 and 27 July. On this occasion the car was headed by Jaime Melo and Tony Vilander. The two drivers will continue the development of the car in preparation for the race debut in 2012.

The Daytona track is part of the Ferrari legacy. In 1967, at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1967, the company won an amazing hat-trick with two factory Ferrari 330 P4s and a 412 entered by NART. The last victory of a Ferrari car prototype dates back to 1972 when Mario Andretti and Jacky Ickx triumphed with the 312 PB.

Another race series, another name, but this one you'll be more likely to remember.

While we wait to know the future of the Ferrari 458 Grand Am version of the Italia, last weekend the 458 GT2 Italia won second place in the Grand Prix of Mosport, Ontario, the fourth stage of American Le Mans Series.

Jaime Melo and Toni Vilander take the GT2 to a second place at Mosport.

The car, entered by Risi Competizione, was driven by Jaime Melo and Toni Vilander that started at the fifth position on the grid and crossed the line second behind the Corvette of Oliver Gavin and Jan Magnussen, who won the event. At the same time in the U.K., the 458 GT2 of Soheil Ayari Italy and Nicolas Marroco of team JMB Racing dominated the race at Brands Hatch GT Open, the fourth round of the Championship.
