Goodwood Members Meeting, 2021

November 1, 2021 By pete

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

It had been postponed twice, but one month after the superb Goodwood Revival meeting it was time to go again to the Goodwood Motor Circuit for the 78th Members Meeting. So how does the Members Meeting compare with the Revival? You could call it ‘Revival Light’; the racing is as great as at the Revival and the entry list is equally first class, but a bit more varied, as entry requirements do not restrict cars to the circuit’s original race period of 1948 to 1966. As the event is only open to members of the Goodwood clubs, crowds are not a problem and the politeness found at the Revival still prevailed.

A lady photographer friend of mine, when asked if she was going to the Members Meeting, said no, describing it as more of an event for the boys, lacking as it does the period settings and pure theatre of the Revival, which I suppose is a fair description. Well, she missed a fantastic event.

Held over two days with various practice sessions and 15 races, the oldest vehicles were to be found in the SF Edge Trophy for Edwardian Specials of a type that raced up until 1923. The newest entrants being in the Gerry Marshall Trophy for Group 1 saloons that raced between 1970 and 1982.

In addition to the races the spectators were also treated to the sight and sound of Bruno Senna demonstrating Ayrton Senna’s 1991 Honda V12 powered McLaren MP4/6. Then a celebration, made up of 13 examples of the Jaguar XJR-15s that raced in the Intercontinental Challenge of 1991, and a Rally Sprint held on the Saturday evening and Sunday morning on a track which included parts of the circuit and paddocks.

The races were as follows:

The Gerry Marshall Trophy, (two heats on Saturday and a final on Sunday) for Group 1 saloons 1970 to 1982. Heat one being for cars up to 2800cc, heat two for cars 2800cc and above. The top 15 finishers in each heat went through to the final.

Hailwood Trophy, for two stroke 250cc and 350cc GP Motor Cycles up to 1983, and 750cc motor cycles of the early 1970s.

Don Parker Trophy, for 500cc Formula 3 cars

Ronnie Hoare Trophy for road going sports and GT cars of a type which raced between 1960 and 1966.

Those pre-WWI race cars are something absolutely marvelous. Impossible not to be astonished by the ideas, the construction and the guys who drove it at full throttle!
