Modena Track Days, Nurburgring

July 8, 2009 By hugues

166 MM barchetta Touring # 0052 M had been stored for the last 45 years in Arizona and is still unrestored.

Story and photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

Every two years, two days of free practice are organized at the Nurburgring circuit in Germany by Modena Motorsport, which specializes in the restoration and maintenance of classic and
racing Ferraris. Modena Motosports works with Ferrari Corse Clienti for the assistance of Ferrari F1 owners.

The field of F1 Ferraris is the climax of this meeting with cars ranging from a rare 1950 Grand Prix car to the 2006 248 F1. Also on hand were the 312 F1 of 1967, the ex-Gilles Villeneuve 312 T 4, the F1-90 of Nigel Mansell and nearly all the types of F1 Ferraris driven by Michael Schumacher during his career with the Scuderia.

166 MM barchetta Touring # 0052 M engine is an F2 unit with rare gear driven camshafts. Sometime circa 1959 the car was sold to a Rege Lee Litton of Scottsdale AZ, who left it in a barn. When he died in 2004 the car was sold again.

Some classic Ferraris take part to a Concours d’Elégance but most of them take the track.Ferraris with fenders included the 166 MM Touring barchetta S/N 0052 M, found in Arizona a few years ago, a 212 Inter Vignale convertible S/N0227 EL, a 340 America Vignale spider S/N 0196 A, a 312 PB S/N 0888 driven in period by Ickx and Redman, two 512 Ms S/N 1002 and 1018, an F40 LM, and two 333 SPs.

166 MM barchetta Touring # 0052 M interior is relatively original. The car has a long and significant race history.

Ferrari Grand Prix driver Jacky Ickx made a welcome appearance; you can read his interview here: A Word or Two with Jacky Ickx

    Sorry – but the “200S”, chassis #1657 is in fact a 150S!
