Ferrari Owners Mystified by Modifications

April 2, 2019 By pete

Parody, April 1, 2019
Words and illustrations by Richard Bartholomew

A renegade group of disgruntled Ferrari mechanics has possibly been committing atrocities on certain Ferraris, but so far nobody is sure of what the heck is going on. Some owners of the fabled Italian brand have reported returning from vacations and finding their prized Ferraris refurbished and redone in odd ways. Inside jobs are suspected but nobody has taken credit yet. The changes range from the simplistic, like the Cyclops-Dino in our lead image, to fantastic, complex modifications like making an SUV out of Testarossa. The Saga of Count Trossi

As the 1940s drew to a close, three of Alfa Romeo’s most talented drivers in the pre or post-war years were all lost to the Milanese company within one year. Forty-four year-old Achille Varzi died in practice for the Grand Prix d’Europe at the Bremgarten circuit at Berne, in Switzerland. His teammates were Jean-Pierre Wimille, Count Trossi, and Consalvo Sanesi.

During the Monterey Car Week, the most amazing cars are everywhere, on every street and in every driveway (the good citizens of Carmel-by-the-Cash-Register are happy to rent rooms in their homes for the visiting hordes).

Stuttgart Extravaganza: Italians

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

It was whilst walking back to our hotel during the Paris Retromobile show that I mentioned to my pal that I would like to visit a German Classic car show and suggested we attend the forthcoming Retro classic show in Stuttgart. [Read more…] about Stuttgart Extravaganza: Italians

Stuttgart Extravaganza: Germans

And here are the German cars photographed at the Stuttgart Retro Classics show in March. Big, often heavy, fast, streamlined, but always well built, German classics are in many cases the obverse of Italian automobiles of the same era. But look what we are missing when we concentrate only on French and Italian cars.

Mille Miglia Alfas Meet Again

March 19, 2019 By pete

“At full throttle, the noise is almost terrifying!”
Those words were penned by an automotive critic who was offended by the visceral response of an Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 back in the day.

70 Years of Abarth at Geneva

March 19, 2019 By pete

Photos by Alessandro Gerelli

Abarth & C. was officially established seventy years ago, on April 15, 1949. In celebration, this year at Geneva was a very nice grouping of Abarths (curiously minus the 750 GT Zagato and the 750 Allemano Spider, among others). Alessandro Gerelli was there last week to photograph the collection. [Read more…] about 70 Years of Abarth at Geneva

Merit Kits and the Missing BlueBird

March 19, 2019 By pete

We got a lot of comments on the recent Merit Kit story by Aldo Zana. A lot. For years, your Editor, holed up in a very northern Minnesota town in the 1950s, thought he was the only guy in the world who knew about Merit kits. [Read more…] about Merit Kits and the Missing BlueBird

Dear Dale,

Nice article and nice photo, a well-known one. I fully agree with the conclusion of the article. I attach here a period color art of the Stapp’s accident published by the Italian popular magazine La Tribuna Illustrata, May 8, 1932. [Read more…] about Death of the Stapp Land Speed Record Car
