Dear fellow Abarth/Zagato enthusiast:

We are proud to announce the release of a new website (www.abarth750GTforum.com) dedicated to the Fiat Abarth 750GT Zagato “Double Bubble”. (Photo above by Greg Birch) This upcoming year will be the 100th year of Zagato (1919-2019). With many other world-wide events scheduled to celebrate this mile stone, we felt that it would be a wonderful opportunity to announce and launch our project. What about sending an Italian chassis out of Italy to have coachwork built? The normal direction would be to send your chassis to Italy where it would be given a fine set of new clothes by one of the famous carrozzerias that dotted the landscape in the 50s and 60s. It would be unique, well done, inexpensive and probably beautiful. Being contrary then would involve having a chassis made in Italy bodied in some country not particularly known for automobiles and automobile design, like Austria. Mdina Grand Prix, 2018

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

Mdina, October 13-14 The alarm on my phone has gone off far too early and I pull back the curtains to find that the weather does not look too bad; I can even see the sun through the clouds. Maybe the dire weather forecast for Sunday was wrong. [Read more…] about Mdina Grand Prix, 2018

Concours d’Elegance at Mdina

November 6, 2018 By pete

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

October 12, 2018 “Do you think we should take an umbrella?” asked my wife as we walked out of our hotel past the full umbrella stand located by the door. “No,” says I. “The sun is shining and the sky is blue, we’ll be OK.” We caught the bus for Mdina and then walked into the silent city through the ancient gate. The ArtCenter College of Design Car Classic is not billed as a concours. And it’s not. It is more of a collection of cars curated anew each year to make a statement.

This year the event at their hilltop campus had one big emphasis — to celebrate the work of its graduates who had achieved something in automotive styling. [Read more…] about ArtCenter Classic 2018

1925 Bugatti Brescia

A Bit on the Brescia

Vince Johnson will detail the ‘Butterfly’ Bugatti below, but first a few interesting facts about Ettore’s most successful model in terms of sales. The Brescia Bugatti was an evolution of Bugatti’s first production car from 1910, the Type 10 and Type 13. During that period, Bugatti model nomenclature was based on the length of the wheelbase, in general, the T 13 being the shortest, and the T23 the longest. But in 1921, after the total domination of an event in Italy, Ettore Bugatti decided to name his most recent model after the race. [Read more…] about 1925 Bugatti Brescia

Vintage Collingrove Hillclimb, South Australia

Barossa Vintage Collingrove Hillclimb, South Australia, 7 October 2018 The oldies were back (the cars, not the drivers) in the wine country north-east of Adelaide for the Sporting Car Club of South Australia’s annual vintage hillclimb near Angaston. Entries had come from across the continent and while most took less than a minute to get to the top, the narrow track is challenging and there’s little room for error.

Supercars in Costume

Story and photos by Richard Bartholomew

Why should children have all the fun of dressing up and scaring people? Though we get no treats from these endeavors that won’t stop us from pulling a little trick this time of year – actually all year – but here we go…spooky chopped tops and scary suicide doors abound, extra headlights or none at all, be afraid be very afraid. A lot of people are. [Read more…] about Supercars in Costume

Alfa Romeo 1900 Primavera

One of the most striking cars I’ve ever seen is a 1957 Alfa 1900 Primavera coupe with a Boano body. This car is so rare that I have never even seen a picture of one. [Read more…] about Alfa Romeo 1900 Primavera

Lancia D 24 and D 50R

It would be difficult if not impossible to find a more compelling story than that of Peter Giddings. In his youth in England, he restored a BSA three-wheeler, then a Brooklands Riley 9, and then a chain drive Frazer Nash, which he rebuilt in his living room (I say “restored” because owning these cars in England in the sixties would require continuous attention just to keep them running). He started racing the Frazer Nash in 1959, and competed in virtually every race circuit and hillclimb in England, earning his full FIA International racing license in 1961. In 1985, he raced his Alfa Romeo Monza and his P3 Alfa Scuderia Ferrari Tipo B at the Monterey Historics, and was awarded the Phil Hill trophy. [Read more…] about Lancia D 24 and D 50R

Frazer Nash Chain Gang

Archives, November 2016

Jonathan Sharp wrote up a very nice piece for us about the Firle Hillclimb Revival, with plenty of enticing photos of car guys and girls just having fun with their classics. It certainly hit a note with our readers. Then Peter Giddings emailed us about his experiences driving a Frazer Nash ‘Chain Gang’ at the original Firle Hillclimb in 1963. We begged for more and here is his story:

I could not believe my eyes when I saw your “Firle Hillclimb Revival”, the setting for several of my early attempts at competitive speed hill climbing.” A report from Autosport, July 19, 1963 reads in part, “Last May P. H. Giddings had rocketed up in 28.69 secs. in a 1928 Frazer Nash fitted with a 1926 A.C. engine, and on Sunday this incredible device did 28.66 secs. to take third place in the most hotly contested class of the day. How this chain-driven car can be coaxed up Firle so quickly only Mr. Giddings knows!”
