Giovanna Takes Her First Stradale Ride with Teo Zeccoli

Giovanna Scaglione relates here experiences riding in the Stradale:

Every new car designed by my Babbo was a sister to me! When he designed the 33 Stradale and realized the car, I bothered my “Babbo” so much that, one day, fed-up and desperate, he asked our personal friend Teodoro Zecccoli, Autodelta test driver, to take me for a ride on the car.

Techno-Classica Essen, Germany 2018

April 3, 2018 By pete

Story and Photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

For the 30th consecutive year, Techno-Classica continued to set records, despite the fact that another event, Retro Classics in Stuttgart, was organized at the same time and only 400 kilometers from Essen.

If the classic car market has calmed down after the hype of recent years, at shows like Techno-Classica, there is always the same amount of classic cars, if not more. And the prizes remain strong for the quality cars.

In fact, one of the world’s leading auction house, RM Sotheby’s, has announced that it will organize a spectacular auction during next year’s Techno-Classica, bringing this event to another dimension.

But before that, let’s have a look to a small selection of what was on show this year. [Read more…] about Techno-Classica Essen, Germany 2018

Pssst! Sexy French and Italian PostCARDs

A little more than five years ago I put away my copy of Erik Verhaest’s amazing booklet of post cards with an Italian car theme. It’s a small booklet, and went unnoticed in a large stack of books stored in a corner until the inevitable clean up revealed it once more. And again I was amazed and delighted with the postcards, most of which were in color and from the 1960s. And so I went to the huge archives of VeloceToday.com and retrieved the below article, updated it, and made contact again with the delightful Mr. Verhaest.

After a few days of enjoyable email discussion about his postcard collection and helping to identify some cars in the gorgeous locations, Erik Verhaest, aka “M.carpedi”, reflected a bit on the fun we had guessing the cars. “What a wonderful hobby!” he said. We couldn’t have agreed more. [Read more…] about Pssst! Sexy French and Italian PostCARDs

Eisenstark’s Siata Part 3: Making Amelia

March 1, 2018—two days before Walt Eisenstark’s SIATA goes on a truck to take its trip down to Amelia Island—work continues.

It’s not like the automotive reality shows where everyone is running in circles throwing parts around and some heavily tattooed owner is screaming “if it’s not done in the next 8 hours it won’t be on the truck and it won’t get to auction and we won’t make a huge profit and you’ll all be fired!” This is Automotive Restorations, Inc. Everything is moving along smoothly with a purpose—no histrionics, just pure, professional calm. Everything gets done, no show-boating. The SIATA goes out for a drive on the last day of February: no seat, but a very nice milk carton in its place. The car has never run better; it now idles beautifully and pulls strongly to 5000 RPM.

Graham Gauld at Avignon

Story by Graham Gauld

The Avignon Auto Show took place last weekend (March 23-25) and as usual I went there to see what cars would turn up. This year they decided to honor the 70th anniversary of Porsche so the main show area featured the German make.

I hate to admit this but I am really not a Porsche fan but I must say the organizers had gathered a very representative array of racing Porsches and the whole show and car park looked like the factory car park in Stuttgart.

Phillip Island Classic, Australia, 2018

Story and photos by Vince Johnson

Phillip Island Classic, Australia, 9-11 March 2018

Australia’s largest historic race meeting, organized by the Victorian Historic Racing Register, is held annually at the flowing Phillip Island circuit south of Melbourne. Decibels were in order all weekend, this year being the 50th anniversary of Formula 5000. Nine cars from New Zealand arrived to contest the International Challenge, reminiscent of the Tasman Series of the 60’s and 70’s where Grand Prix drivers from Europe enjoyed summer sun in the two countries during the northern winter’s off-season. Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

In last week’s story, we left Jonathan Sharp freezing and wondering about the weather for Sunday…

6.00 am Sunday morning, my alarm goes off. I open the curtains…oh dear, snow. I doubt if they will be able to race at the members meeting today as the snow is supposed to be worse the further West you travel and I live to the East of the circuit. Updated from our archives, April 2011

As a consequence of the financial reorganization of Bertone, the liquidators of the Bertone Museum offered six of the most original, thought provoking and classic Italian concept cars ever made. These wonderful cars were auctioned by RM at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Cernobbio, Italy, 21st May, 2011. [Read more…] about The Bertone Auction of 2011

The Geneva International Auto Show, 2018

March 20, 2018 By pete

The Geneva International Motor Show, held from March 8-18, is rather special; Switzerland’s position as a country which has no car manufacturers of its own and plays no favorites, so everyone feels that the playing field is level. Plus there is a lot of money in the country, and to be sure, a lot of money is needed to even contemplate the stars of the show.

The photos below were taken by longtime correspondent Alessandro Gerelli; captions are primarily the work of the Editor, who must take responsibility for any errors. [Read more…] about The Geneva International Auto Show, 2018

Interview with Giovanna Scaglione Part 9

March 20, 2018 By pete

Editor’s Note: This part of the Scaglione interview is very lengthy at 2500 words. However, we think that what is revealed here is of great interest and should be published at one time to encompass the entire story. We hope you will agree.

Part IX: The Stradale Project Encounters Unforeseen Difficulties

Two geniuses rarely co-exist together comfortably, and sure enough problems arose between Ing. Chiti, immersed in his racing world, and Scaglione, compelled to resolve the growing technical and assembly problems by himself. That silent war was flavored with numerous embittered letters that Scaglione sent without effects to all pertinent addresses. Years later, Scaglione would describe his time at Settimo Milanese as “the worst period of his life.” However, with proverbial Tuscan obstinacy, he finished the first Stradale prototype in a relatively short time, from January to September 1967.

And How! Goodwood Members Meeting

March 20, 2018 By pete

Letters and photos from Jonathan Sharp on the occasion of the Goodwood Members Meeting

Tuesday March 13

Pete,
The Goodwood 76th Members meeting is taking place this coming weekend. I have purchased a weekend ticket and hopefully will be attending.

I have just seen the entry list and it is very good. The big problem will probably be the weather. Whilst the past few days have been a bit more spring like by the weekend the temps are dropping to only a few degrees above zero and we may even get snow!

So assuming I am able to attend, and it is of interest, can I have a slot in VeloceToday.com for the 27th March? [Read more…] about And How! Goodwood Members Meeting

Part VIII: Near Crisis Creating the World’s Most Beautiful Automobile-the Alfa Romeo Stradale

From the moment of the first T-33 victory at the 1967 Fléron hillclimb in Belgium to support the growing success of Alfa Romeo racing cars on the circuits of the world, and to add contrast against other competing European “dream cars”, President Luraghi (CEO of Alfa Romeo S.p.A.) absolutely wanted to start small production of a high performance road car.
