Pistons and Prop Show, U.K.

October 10, 2013 By pete

The Wing Walkers Special--Boeing Stearman biplanes. A test flight early morning.

By Roy P. Smith

The new Pistons & Props show recently held in the UK at Northamptonshire’s Sywell Aerodrome on the 28 and 29 of September, 2013, is the latest in the current theme in the UK to have Festivals of Speed; and when you have speed you have aircraft as well as cars.

The show featured a Racing Runway and Sprint Drag Strip where the spectators could see, very close up, the spectacle of Drag Racing over a short strip. It also provided the start line view point for the other displays of speed where the participants ran down the strip turned right onto the runway and went for it; the F1 cars were reaching 160 mph plus. An incredible array of static machinery drew the crowds (13,000 +) to see dozens of car clubs, trade stands, copious food outlets, a fun fair, and racing teams spread over a huge display area. With easy access, great weather and with the fine backdrop of the Art Deco airfield buildings, this is an event with a future. Next year is already booked for the 27-28 September 2014. Verdict: a good event, a few timing issues, but there will always be teething problems at a first event. We look forward to the next one.

Nice photos but lotus gp car is not senna’s. It’s a 1989 model driven by either piquet or nakajima.
