Rally Portugal Surprises: In English and Italian

April 4, 2012 By Roberto

Visible evidence of one of the most popular sports in the world. Where is the WRC Rally U.S.A.?

After an endless series of twists and turns, the “Vodafone Rally de Portugal” was turned upside down. Sebastian Leob nearly destroyed his car on an early special stage and retired. Many stages had to be cancelled for safety reasons. The Citroen DS3 of Hirvonen appeared to be a clear winner…until post race scrutineering excluded the Citroen from the results due to technical irregularities.

Loeb blew it on an early special stage.

The FIA technical delegate found that the Citroen’s clutch did not conform to the homologation A5733, and expressed doubts about the conformity of the turbine of the turbocharger. Citroen replied that although these were deemed ‘non compliant’, they did not affect the speed of the car.

Loeb Citroen

This just about sums up Loeb's miserable weekend.

For Citroen, the Rally de Portugal was pretty much a disaster. Championship leader Loeb, who was the victim of a disastrous run off the road during the SS3, admitted he simply blew it.

“I did not understand the notes,” Loeb said, “I thought it was right to move left, so I went the wrong way. I do not know how many times the machine turned over, but enough to know right away that we could not start tomorrow. The rear part of the roll cage has been damaged by bending. “

There were more twists. Both Petter Solberg and Jari-Matti Latvala, went off the road on the second day of the rally after occupying first and second positions and both had to retire.

Latvala-pit

About as close as a photographer gets to a open WRC car. The pit paranoia is similiar that of F1.

The organizers posted provisional results with the victory going to the Citroen of Hirvonen, but after the inspection the results were modified and the winner ended up being the Ford Fiesta WRC of Mad Østberg. He was able to accumulate some championship points but despite the upsets, the top of the standings remain unchanged with Loeb in command of the Drivers’ Championship and Citroen at the top of the constructor’s points. It is still very early in the season.

Dani Sordo and the Mini did well again, taking the Powerstage. Their day will come..

Worth noting is the excellent performance of Dani Sordo who, after a series of small problems throughout the race, achieved best time in the Power Stage with the Mini John Cooper Works WRC.

The next round of the WRC is scheduled for April 26 to 29, at the Rally Argentina.

Football (soccer) is also one of the worlds most popular sports yet it has no following in the U.S., Ditto F1. Best not to get into a discussion as to why this is so.
