Fuori Concorso, 2024

June 3, 2024 By pete

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

The Fuori Concorso founded 5 years ago by Guglielmo Miani and curated by Andrea Luzardi is not really a concorso along the lines of Hampton Court or Pebble Beach. There are no judges, no points are lost because your hose clips are wrong and your emergency window winder was upside down in the glove box, nobody wins and nobody loses. Rather the event is a celebration of car culture held in the green and pleasant surrounds of Villa Grumello and Villa Sucato on the shores of Lake Como in northern Italy. Milano AutoClassica, 2019

Our faithful correspondent in Milan recently visited one of the largest automobile shows in Italy, Milano AutoClassica, held from November 22-25. Alessandro Gerelli lives in Bresso, near Milan, and has sent us his reports from this event for many years. We thought that since the AutoClassica event is well -described elsewhere, it is an appropriate time to say a few words about the author/photographer before we present this year’s AutoClassica coverage. Gerelli at the Coppa d’Oro delle Dolomiti

July 31, 2018 By pete

Photos by Alessandro Gerelli

The Coppa d’Oro delle Dolomiti, Alessandro Gerelli, and the Editor are all 71 years old. While this is purely coincidental, Alessandro’s phenomenal coverage of the modern event is not. It is the result of years of dedication to his photography, his passion, and his ongoing and remarkable support of VeloceToday.com. He began reporting the event, a re-creation of the original race that began in 1947, sixteen years ago in 2002 when Phil Hill was an honored guest. A little late but a wonderful journey up the Stelvio with a top notch reporter and photographer, Peter Collins.

June 18-21, 2015. I last joined up with this event as long ago as 2003. At that time it was showing signs of a healthy future with many features not normally found in fixtures of this type.

I have just been lucky enough to cover it again and can report only good things. Under the organization of the Circolo Veneto Automoto and headed by the excellent Stefano Chiminelli, Le Mitiche can now offer three days of superb driving, with an entry limited to approximately 100 cars, with good hotels, superb organization and almost hassle-free motoring. The Circolo’s greatest asset is that it consists of a passionate group of club members who just want to organize the best event of this sort that they possibly can. In addition they are non-profit making and this is reflected in the cost, so there are no horrendous entry fees. [Read more…] about With Peter Collins at the Mitiche Sport a Bassano 2015

Coppa d’Oro delle Dolomiti 2014

July 29, 2014 By Gerelli

The sole Bugatti in the wonderful environment of Corvara in Alta Badia.

Story and photos by Alessandro Gerelli

The Coppa d’Oro for historic cars has usually been held at the end of August, but for organizational reasons, it has been moved to mid-July.

The result was gorgeous from the weather point of view, and all the participants enjoyed the wonderful sights of the Dolomites, going from Cortina to Merano and then back to Cortina going up and down through many “Passi Dolomitici”.

Unfortunately the number of participants was also very low (about 50 cars at the start and 40 at the arrival) and also the “quality” if compared with the editions of few years ago. This year there was only one Bugatti, one Ferrari, no Maseratis, a few interesting Alfas and Lancias. There were many English cars on hand.

Of course this is a trend which is common to all the “oldtimer” races, but we enthusiasts feel we are missing the sight of those lovely old cars idled in garages.

It has got to be one of the most delightful affairs of all; a warm, friendly gathering of truly knowledgeable car enthusiasts who are just as happy with an OSCA as an Ortolani. If you own an open sports car from the golden era of the great Italian road races like the Mille Miglia, Targa Florio or Coppa d’Oro, you must attend Le Mitiche Sport a Bassano. Come once and you will become a Mitiche addict, and both a certified sports car driver and a certified nut ! A certified driver because of the gruelling, non-stop challenging mountain roads, a certified nut because all the cars are barchettas, meaning open cockpit, and it always rains in the mountains!

Photo Story by Dino Brunori

Le Mitiche Sport brings out a wide variety of historic racing cars not seen elsewhere in the world including a great number of of our favorite small displacement Italian sports racers. But also eligible are the legendary big cars like the Mercedes SSK below making it an event not to be missed.

1928 Mercedes SSK is a huge affair next to the miniscule Italian specials. It was driven by the team of Bernhard and Henry Bauer from Germany.
