Balancing the Lancia V4

January 29, 2024 By pete

The Lambda was the first in a long line of narrow angle V4 Lancias. Did the V4 generate more vibration than the standard four? And how were they balanced? Geoff Goldberg wanted to know. Photo by Jonathan Sharp

The display of Lancia Lambdas at the London Classic was a wonderful outing for this rare Lancia. In a serendipitous moment, while ace photographer Jonathan Sharp was snapping at every Lambda he could, back in Chicago Geoffrey Goldberg emailed and asked if we would like a copy of his latest publication, a booklet entitled Balancing the Lancia V4. Since the Lambda was the first production V4, a good opportunity.

Howard Moon: Saving Grace

The below article first appeared in the April 1991 issue of Car Collector and Car Classic magazine. We republish it as a tribute to the late Howard Moon. A postscript follows.

There have been, at various times, Jaguars, Citroens, Alfas and BMWs parked at Howard Moon’s halfway house in Falls Church, Virginia—most of his boarders are halfway between the local scrap yard and total restoration. Moon’s unspoken mission is to save them from the former whenever possible. But despite the attempts to maintain diversity, Moon is best known for his 25-year dedication to saving pre 1975 Lancias. In his words, post-1975 Lancias are “gross parodies of a once-proud house tradition, originally typified by quality, innovation, and an almost sculptural approach to parts manufacturing,” and as such, simply not worth saving. Coppa d’oro delle Dolomiti, 2012

September 26, 2012 By Gerelli

This year's winner is Canè and Galliani with a Lancia Aprilia.

Story and Photos by Alessandro Gerelli

A very rainy edition of the Coppa d’Oro delle Dolomiti in Cortina d’Ampezzo witnessed the victory of Canè Galliani in both the events, the Coppa and the “Alte Sfere Heritage by Bark” of Sunday morning.

As for other international events, the cars in the entry list are becoming more and more “young”: this year no Ferraris, only two Maseratis, no Oscas, one Bugatti, very few etceterinis, few Alfas, but many Jaguar, Triumph, Austin, Porsche.

VeloceToday Helps Solve Case of the Mystery Lancia

July 7, 2010 By pete

A Jodi Ellis rendition of the Lancia Special as raced in 1953 at Avus.

By Pete Vack

We were just beginning to think that the case of the Lancia Mystery car would go unsolved. It was probably a one off, and it was described as having mechanical components from a Lancia Aprilia, including the engine, transmission, and front end, all connected by a tubular or ladder chassis.

The steering wheel, headlamps and fasteners were of German manufacture. The body was made of thin aluminum and covered with a light layer of fiberglass. It was probably built as a racecar but had a full windshield from an MGA and a spare tire. The style was more Teutonic than Latin, and yet it is attractive despite a very short wheelbase and large wheels. Was it built to race or drive on the streets or both? Was this an Italian or Swiss Etceterini? Or a German home built special that never crossed the Alps?
