The grille could be spotted from the street, slightly nosing its way out of the one-car garage. Even from that distance, it was immediately recognizable and, as one moved closer, the lines revealed themselves; tautly pulled over the 6.00 by 16-inch tires, the coachwork was muscular, handsome, yet cat-like and breathtakingly beautiful. That grille, perhaps a bit too massive, too American, was the key; this was beyond a doubt one of Pietro Frua’s (1913-1983) masterpieces. The Frua Maseratis, like many Italian cars, look more well-proportioned, much smaller, more graceful when viewed in real life. The experience is unforgettable.
This Maserati, S/N 2103, was for sale. I wanted it. Badly. But at $7000? No way.
