The Real Stories of the Fabled Alfa B.A.T.S

October 27, 2020 By pete

If you are thinking about spending as much as 20 million (or more) on three used Alfas at tomorrow night’s Sotheby’s Auction, it is advised that you read the following four articles, which provide additional background information about the Scaglione B.A.T.s. From the Archives of VeloceToday, they were published in 2019 but timely and relevant today.

After making a few sketches, working with Ezio Cingolani, who was responsible for fabrication, Franco Scaglione developed a full size model, watched daily by Nuccio Bertone. This is B.A.T. 5

B.A.T. 5: A Stunning Achievement

What are these openings for? One, to strengthen the rather large fin itself, and two, to allow some of the air to escape that was ‘tunneled’ through the extremely inward curved fins on B.A.T. 7.

B.A.T. 7: The Best of the Bunch

Aiming to create more of a GT car and needing a direct connection with Alfa, Scaglione forgot penetration and allowed the use of the new Giulietta grille on B.A.T. 9.

Online Car Auctions in the Age of Covid-19

July 14, 2020 By pete

This Ferrari 288 GTO s/n 55223 is the answer to a crucial online auction question: Can $1 million cars sell online? Not only is the answer “yes” with a final price of $2.3 million, but it is one of two seven-figure cars sold in RM Sotheby’s second Online Only auction, Driving into Summer. The other was a Ferrari Enzo that brought $2.6 million a few lots later. Photo courtesy RM Sotheby’s.

Other than home repairs, yard work, baking and Netflix binging, much of life has gone remote and online.

That’s true for collector car auctions, too

We’ve now seen enough online only auctions to reach some conclusions, the most important of them being: online only collector car auctions are a commercial success, if lacking in the excitement generated by their live counterparts.

Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS Villa d’Este coupè by Touring of 1949 sold for 785k.

Story and photos by Alessandro Gerelli

During the weekend of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, an important auction was held by RM Sotheby’s in the nearby Villa Erba. Only 40 lots were in the catalog with a couple of Riva boats and 17 Ferraris.

Top Ferrari models were a 1961 California SWB (with an estimate of more than 10 M euros) and a 1960 Berlinetta 250 SWB, unfortunately both unsold. Top price was reached for the Ferrari 212 Export by Touring of 1952 at 6.7 M euros.

All the prices are in euros and include the buyer’s premium.
