Wintry weather made conditions difficult for competitors in this year’s Targa Adelaide, held over four days in the hills around the South Australian capital. In the opening round of the Australian Targa Championship, modern cars were included for the first time and entries ranged from a 1951 Holden 48-215 to the latest Nissan GT-R.

Story and Photos by Vince Johnson

South Australians have been treated to a showcase of Italian culture, tradition and style at Carnevale time for the last 36 years. The food, fashion and music festival at the Adelaide Showgrounds in February brings out the best in Italian style, nowhere more so than in the car and motorcycle displays. Single-make clubs included Alfa Romeo, Ducati, Ferrari and Fiat 500. The Scuderia Italian Car Club presented a colourful selection of several makes and local distributor Prestige Formula had new examples of Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Maserati on show.

The 2011 Supaloc Classic Targa Adelaide, held from 14-17 September, marked the return of classic rally cars to the hills around the South Australian capital. Covering over 200 kilometres of special stages on closed roads, this first round of the 2011 Australian Targa Championship revived memories of the Classic Adelaide Rally, last run in 2009. Outright winner in that event, Kevin Weeks, has signed his company, Supaloc Steel Building Systems, to a four-year deal as naming rights sponsor. The V8 supercars were back in town for the Clipsal meeting on South Australia’s Adelaide street circuit in March. While the home-grown Holdens and Fords had the track to themselves for two 250km races over the weekend, the GTs had centre stage on Friday evening. The first round of the 2011 Vodka O Australian GT Championship kicked off with a one-hour race into the sunset following Thursday’s practice and qualifying.

Phillip Island Classic, Australia, 2011

Australia 18-20 March 2011

Maserati 250Fs haven’t been thick on the ground at race meetings since the fifties, but there were three of them at the Phillip Island Classic in March. During Sunday’s lunchtime demonstration they ran together for several laps. Peter Giddings in 2501/2523, Tom Price in #2525 and Jeffrey O’Neill in #2527 were obviously enjoying the moment. They’d filled the podium in their first race on Saturday morning in that order, proving they weren’t there just to circulate, and the sound of these three Italian classics had grown men misty eyed.

Melbourne Australia, 19 – 21 March 2010.

To celebrate the 21st anniversary of the Phillip Island Classic, the Victorian Historic Racing Register fittingly chose Alfa Romeo as the featured marque for the event. Held annually at the sweeping 4.4 km circuit south of Melbourne, the international stature of this meeting is well established. Its reputation is such that the Alfa Romeo factory, in its centenary year, sent one of its irreplaceable Alfettas, chassis #159.111, engine #159.221.
