March is festival month in South Australia across the state with performing and visual arts, music, dance, magic, acrobatics and more in full swing. And at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival in the parklands east of the city you would have seen and heard all of these, with wheels on.

Since 2014, a 1.6km section of the original circuit of the 1985-95 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix has joined in the festivities. On Friday afternoon many city workers stayed in town to watch the police-escorted ‘Peak Hour of Power’ as it left Victoria Park in the parklands east of the city. With the Formula 1 cars leading, they made their way through the central business district to Gouger Street’s cafe strip. Cars, drivers and teams filled the street display, the restaurants and cafes were overflowing and the public had their weekend appetite whetted with the close-up spectacle.

Everything from Formula 1 to a Toyota minibus was on the street circuit for the Repco Adelaide Motorsport Festival earlier this month. Le Mans racers, real (and not so real) Lamborghinis, Ferraris young and older, a Maserati and the second-built Brabham BT62 shared track time with heritage Alfas and Lolas.

It’s been 30 years since Keke Rosberg won the first Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix held on the streets of Adelaide. To commemorate the anniversary, the Sporting Car Club of South Australia assembled an impressive line-up of F1 cars of the era to headline a 200-strong field of race and road cars for a weekend of sprints in the city’s Victoria Park.

The 2011 Supaloc Classic Targa Adelaide, held from 14-17 September, marked the return of classic rally cars to the hills around the South Australian capital. Covering over 200 kilometres of special stages on closed roads, this first round of the 2011 Australian Targa Championship revived memories of the Classic Adelaide Rally, last run in 2009. Outright winner in that event, Kevin Weeks, has signed his company, Supaloc Steel Building Systems, to a four-year deal as naming rights sponsor. Phillip Island Classic, Australia, 2011

Australia 18-20 March 2011

Maserati 250Fs haven’t been thick on the ground at race meetings since the fifties, but there were three of them at the Phillip Island Classic in March. During Sunday’s lunchtime demonstration they ran together for several laps. Peter Giddings in 2501/2523, Tom Price in #2525 and Jeffrey O’Neill in #2527 were obviously enjoying the moment. They’d filled the podium in their first race on Saturday morning in that order, proving they weren’t there just to circulate, and the sound of these three Italian classics had grown men misty eyed.
