As most of our readers know, Steve Earle started the first annual Monterey Historic Car Races in 1974. Gordon McCall was in high school then, and volunteered to pump gas for the race cars, so that probably planted the seed. In eleventh grade at Carmel High, he volunteered as a field crew member for the Pebble Beach show and continued to work the show for an astonishing 28 years. At some point he started a restoration shop, located at the Monterey Airport, and in the months leading up to the ten-day period that locals call “Car Week” the shop was hustling to get cars ready for both car shows and Laguna Seca. In so doing, he met many knowledgeable and influential people in this community.
