Howards’ Stanguellini

By Cliff Reuter

“The Behm Stanguellini was imported by Briggs Cunningham for the 1954 Watkins Glen Race. I was there with my Bandini, but the Stang ran off and hid from every one. Briggs could not fit into it so John Gordon Bennet drove.” (Quote from Sandy MacArthur).

Right after that race Karl Kiekhaefer of Mercury out board motor
bought it and blew up the engine on a dyno while trying to learn
its secrets. It was later owned and raced in the SCCA by Herm Behm.

Why was this unheard of and almost unpronounceable new Etceterini called Stanguellini able to beat the mighty Candy Poole PBX and the MacArthur Bandini Crosley? Because of its brand new Stanguellini DOHC engine which produced 60 bph at 8000 rpm.

This incredible Stanguellini Siluro with its removable fenders is the sole survivor in the world of its type and it has been lovingly restored by its long time owner and rescuer Howard Banaszak. It was shown at the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance. We are proud to welcome it to the Amelia Island Concours.

When I first saw this car on the photos of 2002 Pebble Beach, I was stunned! I’ve seen and owned quite a few pretty cars of my own but this was truly something! I immediately started to explore the etceterini world and I’ve become hooked. I looked for a proper car, truly representative of the era for more than 6 years. Finally, in 2009, I managed to buy my Giaur Champion and an Abarth Record Monza. These cars are the jewels of my collection and the satisfaction I get simply by looking at them is incomparable. I’d love to have a Siata next but till then…

    Keep up the good work!
    All the best,
    Alex Vazeos
