Bugattis Tour Australia

November 20, 2018 By pete

Story and photos by Vince Johnson

From the VeloceToday Archives, South Australia, 10-13 April 2013.

Forty-two members of the Bugatti Club Australia made their way to the Barossa Valley wine country, north-east of Adelaide, for the ‘Five Valleys Run’ in April. Understandably, wineries featured heavily in the itinerary. Interstate members from New South Wales met those who had travelled from Victoria at Stirling on Tuesday evening, not far from Piccadilly Valley in the hills above the state capital.

The VSCCA Mt. Equinox Hillclimb

November 13, 2018 By pete

Story by Pete Vack and Sean Smith
Photos by Sean Smith

On a mountain in Vermont named Equinox, there is a monastery manned by the ultra-reclusive Carthusian Monks, an order founded in France by St. Bruno in 1084 CE. Visitors are not allowed. On another face of the mountain is a tunnel dug for a now-abandoned cryonics receptacle which would have contained the frozen preserved bodies of several prominent high-IQ individuals for future reawakening. Near the summit is a secret Cold-War NORAD radar site, now in use for local radio stations.

What about sending an Italian chassis out of Italy to have coachwork built? The normal direction would be to send your chassis to Italy where it would be given a fine set of new clothes by one of the famous carrozzerias that dotted the landscape in the 50s and 60s. It would be unique, well done, inexpensive and probably beautiful. Being contrary then would involve having a chassis made in Italy bodied in some country not particularly known for automobiles and automobile design, like Austria. Mdina Grand Prix, 2018

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

Mdina, October 13-14 The alarm on my phone has gone off far too early and I pull back the curtains to find that the weather does not look too bad; I can even see the sun through the clouds. Maybe the dire weather forecast for Sunday was wrong. [Read more…] about Mdina Grand Prix, 2018

Concours d’Elegance at Mdina

November 6, 2018 By pete

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

October 12, 2018 “Do you think we should take an umbrella?” asked my wife as we walked out of our hotel past the full umbrella stand located by the door. “No,” says I. “The sun is shining and the sky is blue, we’ll be OK.” We caught the bus for Mdina and then walked into the silent city through the ancient gate. The ArtCenter College of Design Car Classic is not billed as a concours. And it’s not. It is more of a collection of cars curated anew each year to make a statement.

This year the event at their hilltop campus had one big emphasis — to celebrate the work of its graduates who had achieved something in automotive styling. [Read more…] about ArtCenter Classic 2018

1925 Bugatti Brescia

A Bit on the Brescia

Vince Johnson will detail the ‘Butterfly’ Bugatti below, but first a few interesting facts about Ettore’s most successful model in terms of sales. The Brescia Bugatti was an evolution of Bugatti’s first production car from 1910, the Type 10 and Type 13. During that period, Bugatti model nomenclature was based on the length of the wheelbase, in general, the T 13 being the shortest, and the T23 the longest. But in 1921, after the total domination of an event in Italy, Ettore Bugatti decided to name his most recent model after the race. [Read more…] about 1925 Bugatti Brescia

Vintage Collingrove Hillclimb, South Australia

Barossa Vintage Collingrove Hillclimb, South Australia, 7 October 2018 The oldies were back (the cars, not the drivers) in the wine country north-east of Adelaide for the Sporting Car Club of South Australia’s annual vintage hillclimb near Angaston. Entries had come from across the continent and while most took less than a minute to get to the top, the narrow track is challenging and there’s little room for error.

Supercars in Costume

October 30, 2018 By pete

Story and photos by Richard Bartholomew

Why should children have all the fun of dressing up and scaring people? Though we get no treats from these endeavors that won’t stop us from pulling a little trick this time of year – actually all year – but here we go…spooky chopped tops and scary suicide doors abound, extra headlights or none at all, be afraid be very afraid. A lot of people are. [Read more…] about Supercars in Costume
