Interview with Giovanna Scaglione Part 9

March 20, 2018 By pete

Editor’s Note: This part of the Scaglione interview is very lengthy at 2500 words. However, we think that what is revealed here is of great interest and should be published at one time to encompass the entire story. We hope you will agree.

Part IX: The Stradale Project Encounters Unforeseen Difficulties

Two geniuses rarely co-exist together comfortably, and sure enough problems arose between Ing. Chiti, immersed in his racing world, and Scaglione, compelled to resolve the growing technical and assembly problems by himself. That silent war was flavored with numerous embittered letters that Scaglione sent without effects to all pertinent addresses. Years later, Scaglione would describe his time at Settimo Milanese as “the worst period of his life.” However, with proverbial Tuscan obstinacy, he finished the first Stradale prototype in a relatively short time, from January to September 1967.

And How! Goodwood Members Meeting

March 20, 2018 By pete

Letters and photos from Jonathan Sharp on the occasion of the Goodwood Members Meeting

Tuesday March 13

Pete,
The Goodwood 76th Members meeting is taking place this coming weekend. I have purchased a weekend ticket and hopefully will be attending.

I have just seen the entry list and it is very good. The big problem will probably be the weather. Whilst the past few days have been a bit more spring like by the weekend the temps are dropping to only a few degrees above zero and we may even get snow!

So assuming I am able to attend, and it is of interest, can I have a slot in VeloceToday.com for the 27th March? [Read more…] about And How! Goodwood Members Meeting

Part VIII: Near Crisis Creating the World’s Most Beautiful Automobile-the Alfa Romeo Stradale

From the moment of the first T-33 victory at the 1967 Fléron hillclimb in Belgium to support the growing success of Alfa Romeo racing cars on the circuits of the world, and to add contrast against other competing European “dream cars”, President Luraghi (CEO of Alfa Romeo S.p.A.) absolutely wanted to start small production of a high performance road car. ‘Dorino’ Zeccoli Remembered

By Vladimir Pajevic

The below tribute is from the AutodeltaGoldenYears.com Rome Senior Corresponding Editor. Vladimir was there on the ground with Autodelta during its formative years and still gathers the few remaining Autodeltisti to reminisce about the Golden Years….he is one of the few who have a well-formed atmospheric view of Teo Zeccoli (Dorino) and the period in which he did his magic.- Bob Little

Another Maestro has left worldly racing circuits forever in search of heavenly paddocks. Sometimes, it is difficult to find the right words at one’s leave; too many memories, too many unanimous words and feelings to express. It is always some part of our lives that remains on that ship that is leaving the harbor. [Read more…] about ‘Dorino’ Zeccoli Remembered

Graham Gauld Interview with Teo Zeccoli

Zeccoli flat out at Spa in the Alfa Romeo GTA (Photo credit Centro Documentazione Alfa Romeo, Arese, Zeccoli Archives)

Teo Zeccoli passed away last week and it seemed fitting that we should republish Graham Gauld’s wonderful interview with Zeccoli in 2001, first published in VeloceToday.com on January 24 2013.

Story by Graham Gauld

In the alphabet of the world’s racing drivers, Teodoro Zeccoli comes somewhere near the end. He is a driver we have all heard about, due to his particular exploits with Alfa Romeo, but he is more than just a young Italian who grew up wanting to be a racing driver; Zeccoli was one of the favored test drivers of Carlo Chiti. Apart from being one of Chiti’s principals at Autodelta he was also the test driver for Chiti’s Formula 1 bad-egg, the ATS. [Read more…] about Graham Gauld Interview with Teo Zeccoli

English speaking Alpinists, worldwide, especially those of the A310, GTA, R5 Turbo persuasion:

As most of you will know over the last ten years I have written a number of Alpine books in English, for our English speaking Alpine enthusiasts around the world. Each was a labor of love and funded solely by myself. Each one has been successful. [Read more…] about And How! Alpine Photos Needed

Alfa Romeo 33/2 Coupé special by Pininfarina

Looking at the 33/2 Coupé Special, take the time to savor the moment and let your eyes to explore the details of a very special car that has the flavor of an artistic creation, enhanced by the yellow color to the sensual lines of the body.

In the late sixties, Ferrari commissioned Pininfarina to do a study of new car with advanced aerodynamics. To design the car, Pininfarina chosen the young Ing. Leonardo Fioravanti, because he was young, had ideas, and even more had a mechanical engineering education at the Politecnico di Milano where his studies were focused on aerodynamics and car body design. And How! The Mystery of the T33 S/N

And How! features open and innovative formats for notices, articles and posts

Roberto Motta photo

Readers who are familiar with the history of the T33 Alfas (and VeloceToday seems to harbor most of them!) are even more fascinated with the series of T33 Stradales that were destined to have fantastic, special bodies built on the chassis. They are some of Alfa Romeo’s most treasured and beautiful showcars. Roberto Motta recent revealed the story of how chassis s/n 75033112 was designed by Fioravanti based on a previous effort called the Ferrari 250 P5. But, we all asked, wasn’t the Alfa s/n 75033115?

Part VII: Wool Threads and Scotch Tape…
“Aerodynamic Fluidity”

An internationally acclaimed graphic artist was once quoted as saying:
“I am going for a level of perfection that is only mine… Most of the pleasure is in getting the last little piece perfect.”

Such a quotation could easily have been applied to Franco Scaglione’s professional standards.
While not everyone will enjoy and appreciate all of his individual design accomplishments, his achievement in the reduction of coefficient of drag, the elimination of air friction or ‘slipperiness’ rates him in the pantheon of greatness…well beyond the achievements his contemporaries.

The Tatra Type 87

March 6, 2018 By pete

This article originally appeared in VeloceToday on February 29, 2012

Story and Photos by Karl Ludvigsen

Journalist Gordon Wilkins said that ‘although it has an impressive performance, it produces in the driver the uneasy exhilaration which may be got from shampooing a lion.’ Consumer advocate Ralph Nader called it the only car that was more dangerous than the much — oft unjustly — maligned Corvair. The German Army was said to have barred its officers from driving it, lest their numbers be diminished even more rapidly than World War II was already managing. [Read more…] about The Tatra Type 87

Tesla Greets Madison Avenue Sports Car Driving and Chowder Society

Chowder Society Breaks Bread with Tesla: Tradition and Revolution Had a Great First Date

© Philippe H. Defechereux 2018

All photos by P. H. Defechereux except where otherwise noted

On the eve of Valentine’s Day, Tuesday February 13, 2018, there took place a ‘”first date” in Manhattan, NY. between two seemingly improbable parties: the venerable but still vigorous and lively Madison Avenue Sports Car Driving and Chowder Society (M.A.S.C.D.C.S.), turning 61 in March; and Tesla Motors Inc., still wet-behind-the-ears at only 15. Intriguingly, nothing was inappropriate about that pre-Valentine first meet luncheon.

The rendezvous spot chosen was the glass-walled street-level Tesla showroom on West 13th street and 10th Avenue. Everyone and everybody on earth today knows who Tesla is and what they do, besides sending cars in orbit with most powerful rockets. But while the M.A.S.C.D.C.S. continues to be a thriving club with growing membership of car-racing-enthusiasts, not everyone outside the greater New York City metropolitan area has heard of the “Chowder Society,” as long-timers fondly call it for short. So bear with us. [Read more…] about Tesla Greets Madison Avenue Sports Car Driving and Chowder Society

Part VI: The Zenith of his Career –
Scaglione’s Independent Sixties

While the American titans of automobile design continued from the early 1950s to travel long distances to such places as Torino and Geneva, London and Paris to learn and observe the holy grail of styling trends being introduced by Franco Scaglione, the Japanese did more than just observe his design language. They learned on site!
