The Mullin Museum Expands Citroën Exhibit With New Vehicles Including 200mph SM
“Citroën: The Man, The Marque, The Mystique” expands with the addition of a 1931 C4G, a 1975 CX2200 Berline and a 1971 SM Bonneville Racecar towed by a custom SM pickup on a trailer equipped with Citroen hydropneumatics.

The Mullin Automotive Museum has expanded its internationally-acclaimed Citroën exhibit with the addition of three vehicles from the French automaker: a 1931 C4G, a 1975 CX2200 Berline, and a 1971 SM Bonneville Racecar. The cars represent the newest component of the museum’s “Citroën: The Man, The Marque, The Mystique” exhibit, which celebrates the quirky yet wildly innovative manufacturer. VeloceToday’s Brandes Elitch paid a visit and a compliment to the exhibition a few weeks ago in VeloceToday:

Against All Odds

January 30, 2018 By pete

Story by Peter Darnall

We all know that Nuvolari won the 1935 German Grand Prix. What most of us didn’t know is that Tazio did it with a two speeed gearbox! Peter Darnall explains…

The Grosser Preis von Deutschland of 1935 was more than a motor race. The Nürburgring would be the setting for the German Grand Prix, the richest and most prestigious event of 1935 on the European racing calendar. Nationalistic fervor ran high as the Nazi government subsidized Silver Arrows faced off against a mixed field; the stage was set for a German victory on their home ground. Franco Scaglione’s daughter Giovanna has chosen to share with you, the interested reader, her personal love and deep affection for her father and hopes you will become more familiar with him as she begins her narration of her personal glimpses of her father.

Aerodynamics Studies

Scaglione’s reserved and minimalistic personality compelled him to draw heavenly automotive shapes according to his own innate sense of form and creativity.

His dream was of an automobile that, like a falling drop of rainwater in the air, could glide along with only the slightest turbulence and with the least friction possible…a car that could travel quickly without disturbing the outside air or creating whistling noises inside the cockpit.

“Loved your article on your toy Ferrari, I fall for the same kind of stuff. I took this on the island of Crete with my phone which makes me question why I have so much invested in cameras……”
–Dale LaFollette

He has a point. This fantastic photo has full resolution, depth of field, astounding color, but of course the cameraman is now more than ever more important than the camera itself. Any camera will do today, but not just any cameraman.

And while this shot in itself is wonderful, note how Dale almost hid the desirable object in the maze of toys. Can you identify them all? Here is a bigger shot…. [Read more…] about Toy Story Two: Fiat and Citroën

Michael T. Lynch: Goodbye Dan Gurney

By Michael T. Lynch

Dan Gurney (April 13, 1931 – January 14, 2018) has left us, and we have lost one of the most charismatic American race drivers of any era. As the son of an opera singer on Long Island, he got the racing bug early, watching the midgets at Freeport Stadium. His hero of the day was midget driver Ted Tappet, whose real name was Phil Walters. Walters would go on to be the first great American postwar road racer, putting America on the international racing map with Briggs Cunningham’s cars. [Read more…] about Michael T. Introduction

Our following story has been pieced together through a series of private interviews conducted over a period of five months with Giovanna Scaglione, and reveals her personal story of her dearly beloved father Franco Scaglione, the world famous Italian automobile designer of the 1950s through the 1970s.

Since the passing of Mr. Scaglione on June 19th, 1993, Giovanna, the only child of Franco Scaglione and Maria Luisa Benvenuti, had politely declined most interview requests, preferring to remain quiet and private in much the same manner as her father preferred to live his life.

Home to Tazio Nuvolari’s Treasures

January 23, 2018 By pete

Text by Peter Darnall and Museum Curator Lorenzo Montagner
Museum photos by Gian Maria Pontiroli

Museum Curator Lorenzo Montagner has previously written a short biography of Tazio Nuvolari. This week Mr. Montagner and Peter Darnall take us inside the fascinating museum that houses Nuvolari’s treasures.

Museo Tazio Nuvolari is located in Mantua, Italy, a few miles from Castel d’Ario, where Nuvolari was born on November 16, 1892. The Nuvolari Museum is housed in an historic fifteenth century building, which served originally as the Church of the Carmelino. One visitor to the museum commented that the unique setting seemed to enhance the sense of intimacy; in his words, the museum was “much more than a collection of trophies.”

Story and model photos by Pete Vack

Following our Alan Boe feature on the 166 MM Ferrari 0010 M in the past two editions of VeloceToday, I thought it might be fun to show a very early model Ferrari. It dates from about 1953. And like most old Ferraris, it has an interesting history. [Read more…] about And How! Ferrari Toy Story

The Kimberly Years

A month after its win at Spa, Luigi Chinetti, Sr. and Lord Selsdon of England placed their barchetta eighth in the Grand Prix of the Auto Club of Paris at Montlhéry, which turned out to be its last race on continental soil. But by no means was s/n 0010 M done racing. In early 1950, the car was sold through Chinetti to Jim Kimberly of Chicago, Illinois, heir to the Kimberly Clark industrial empire. Mullin Automotive Museum Celebrates Citroën

January 16, 2018 By pete

Story by Brandes Elitch
Photos courtesy the Mullin Automotive Museum

About six months ago I got a call from an old friend who is part of a members-only group at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. Knowing that I have a Citroën DS and an SM, he announced that his group had a special invitation to attend the opening of a new exhibit at the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, devoted entirely to the history of Citroën. It didn’t take me long to decide to make the trip, although it is a full day’s drive for me from Sonoma County, 2 hours north of San Francisco. He enticed me further by saying we would drive up there from L.A. in his 1962 Maserati 3500 coupe, which is a pretty brave undertaking considering the traffic there. Remembering Otto Linton

January 16, 2018 By pete

Otto Linton passed away on January 3, and we have lost one of the true pioneers of sports car racing in America. He was born in Vienna, Austria on May 12, 1917. He studied engineering at the University of Vienna and immigrated to the United States in 1938. During the Second World War he worked as an engineer and machinist converting factories to war production in Philadelphia. As a youth he was attracted to cars and racing, and after he arrived in the US he was instrumental in the creation of post war racing, helping form the SCCA in the Philadelphia region.

Otto was a keen supporter of VeloceToday from the beginning, and over the years helped us on many stories, including his OSCA and experience with the ex-George Lymber BNC. Both Carl Goodwin and John Wright wrote about Linton’s racing experiences. For this article, we have taken excerpts from articles about Linton which previously appeared in VeloceToday, and in Carl Goodwin’s excellent book “They Started in MGs”. Ferrari 166 MM 0010 M

January 9, 2018 By pete

Story and Photos by Alan Boe

All old Ferraris have a story to tell but most never get the words out. That, however, is not the case with the magnificent little 166 MM Touring-bodied barchetta, s/n 0010 M, which had its story told twice in Cavallino and in the September 1996 edition of Classic and Sports Cars. It’s worth another look because this one of the most important Ferraris of them all. Ferrari historian and Pebble Beach Judge Alan Boe relates the story.

You may be surprised to find out what it’s like driving an early Ferrari. But before we get into the cockpit, let’s review some pertinent statistics that shed light on the performance and handling characteristics. [Read more…] about Ferrari 166 MM 0010 M
