The voiturette (750cc, 1100 cc and 1500cc) races which took place between 1931 and 1940 were magic; technically interesting cars, around the house race venues, truly international with multi-make participation, a cast of characters from a Siamese Prince to Enzo Ferrari, Dick Seaman’s drives with the ERA, MG and Delage, and a devastating secret weapon unleashed by Mercedes Benz which defeated and demoralized the opposition. The mighty influence of Citroën (minority shareholder but major client) in the running of Panhard became most apparent when the Panhard management in 1959 started to plan a successor of their PL 17. Monsieur Pierre Bercot, Citroën’s boss, made it clear to Jean Panhard that they would not support the Panhard Company to invest in the development of a new mid-sized ‘berline’ (four door sedan). His argument was that Citroën was shortly going to introduce the Ami, an upgraded version on the platform of the 2CV and was already working on a totally new mid-sized model (the GS) to be launched in 1970. It would be a folly to compete with each other in this segment.

In my youth, during the period in which I first encountered motor racing, the 500cc Formula 3 had been the ‘entry’ route to serious single seat racing for some years in Europe but was by that time on its last legs. In the USA, there was less emphasis on single-seaters but by the early ‘60s, Formula Junior had caught on, and I have always seen it as an essential part of my history. I particularly was smitten by the front engine cars from Italy.

For a few years now, R&D departments at paint manufacturers and universities all over the world have been working on the development of water and dirt repellent paints, not only for the automotive industry, but also for use on buildings and in industrial production sites.

Backbone is frayed and in poor condition but holds the pages together. Came with Chassis number 314334 purchased in Germany; however the book is in English. Alfa Romeo Giulia Super Instruction Book.
DIAS Public No. 1034, 2/1965. In GERMAN. This was the supplement book illustrating the Super model which came with the above larger booklet. Pages are good condition but this 19 page supplement has staples and the front and rear covers are loose from the staples. No rips or water mark. and the wiring diagram is intact and in very good condition. $100 or $300 for the set.

Gauld at the VSCC Opener
