Interview with Otto Linton

January 16, 2018 By vack

By John R. Wright

From the archives, October 31st, 2007

Otto Linton was one of those rare and colorful characters who participated in the beginnings of sports car racing in the United States. Linton drove a number of rare Italian cars, including the ex-Cabianca OSCA.

In 2005, I interviewed Linton at Watkins Glen. Linton, along with Denver Cornett, another early competitor, told to me about those early, post WWII days of sport scar racing which began at Watkins Glen. [Read more…] about Interview with Otto Linton

O.S.C.A. FS372 Chassis 1189

The little OSCA in everyday traffic in Buenos Aires.

A Ride in Buenos Aires with a FS OSCA

Story and photos by Cris Bertschi

This article from our archives is so old we even forgot about it. From April 2002, twelve years ago; how time does fly. However, it is still a good article even if the photos are low res and can’t be enlarged without getting out of focus. Squint and enjoy.

It was a normal, boring afternoon when I received an e-mail from my friend Manuel Eliçabe saying that work on his O.S.C.A. was finished, and asking if I wanted to go on a test drive before shipping it to Italy for the 2002 Mille Miglia Retro. I instantly replied, “Tell me the day and time and I’ll be there.” [Read more…] about O.S.C.A. FS372 Chassis 1189

Targa Adelaide, South Australia

Spectators enjoy the Gambino/Hugues 308GTB at Basket Range.

Targa Adelaide, South Australia, 21-25 August 2013

Story and Photos by Vince Johnson unless otherwise noted.

When Jason and John White’s Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera suffered differential problems on the second day of the Targa Adelaide, the chances of them repeating last year’s win were always going to be slim. Nissan driver Steve Glenney, with Bernie Webb navigating, put his knowledge of the South Australian hills roads to good use, taking the lead early and was never headed.

The Cost of Our Passion, 2013

May 30, 2013 By vack

Many Ferraris, some rain, a lot of money.

Story and Photos by Alessandro Gerelli

The RM auction was held last weekend in the gardens of Villa Erba in Cernobbio, together with the Concorso d’Eleganza of Villa d’Este. The catalogue included 38 cars and two Riva motor boats. However, it was really a Ferrari show with 16 entries. Recent models included a 288GTO, F40, F50, Enzo and a 599XX. Most others were from the 1960s. Six Bugattis were on the lawn along with a few other Italians (Maserati, Giannini, Cisitalia, Lamborghini, Lancia and Fiat). The auction was a real success: 27 million euro in sales (around 35 million US dollars) with all the Ferraris sold and most of the lots sold at prices higher than the estimate. The top price was the Ferrari 340, sold at about 10 million euros (including a buyer’s premium of 12%).

Denise McCluggage: Racing the Alfa at the Nurburgring P3

By Denise McCluggage

“I Go Pro” was written for and published by “Sports Cars Illustrated”, February, 1959 and is reprinted here with the permission of the author and artist.

THE FACTORY TEAMS had arrived for the Grand Prix of Germany. (A small championship race that was to follow mine.) A friend who happened to drive for Ferrari (yes, Phil Hill) offered to drive me in my car around the Ring, imparting wisdom enroute. It was a fast lap and a valuable one. But costly, too. Apparently in the thrashing about of the wheel, my benefactor’s hand had brushed the key case which was enough to jar the key which was enough for the bum switch to engage the starter motor and-well, like we were already going. And going very fast. Not until we stopped after a complete tour did we hear the hopeless grinding of the starter motor chewing itself into oblivion. Naturally, it was burned out (oh, the smell of it) and furthermore the starter ring gear was as toothless as an old hag.

A second place for Alonso in India.

For a season that offered so much hope and competition just a few months ago, 2012 F1 has suddenly degenerated into another Red Bull Route with Vettel in charge. He’s on a roll now, the earlier problems with reliability seem to have faded, the speed has returned, and it is unlikely that even Alonso will catch Vettel for the Championship. After India, Alonso is now thirteen points behind Vettel for the Championship, and that has never been a lucky number in racing.

Yellow Crayola Enzo

In 2013 the Crayola Company will celebrate the 110th anniversary of the introduction of their eponymous crayon. Ever since then, kids all over the world have enjoyed creating their masterworks of art while drawing with Crayolas. But recently, I was blown away when I saw those crayons used for a sculpture! Stanley Cohen, an attorney in West Hartford, Connecticut recently commissioned a work of art using Crayola crayons in a most unusual way.

Japanese Grand Prix 2012

Massa all the way.

For what was a yawn of a race, the Japanese Grand Prix has certainly set up an exciting end to the 2012 Grand Prix season. That’s great for fans, Ecclestone, Red Bull, winner Vettel and the remaining five races on the calendar.

Not so good for Ferrari and Alonso, who is now going to have to fight tooth and nail for another crown. After being knocked out in Japan, Alonso is now a mere four points in front of Vettel for the World Championship. Every race, every position will now count heavily and each race may be a nail-biter.

Ferrari has the new—well, seven-month-old—F2012 well sorted out. Pirelli has introduced new tire compounds. And Alonso is proving to be the driver of the year, a champion of champions. All is well in Maranello.
