Faces at the Festival

July 8, 2014 By pete

When you’re smilin’, the whole world smiles with you…

No need for an introduction. Just scroll down to view this amazing album of great drivers just plain enjoying themselves at Goodwood. Well, except for Kimi and Loeb, who never seem to smile. This is Jonathan Sharp at his best. [Ed.]

Story and Photos by Jonathan Sharp

Dario Franchitti, who drove the ex-Hakkinen Mercedes C Class DTM car.

Mark Weber, now driving for Porsche.

07.45am on Sunday morning. Richard 'The King' Petty had just gone to look at the new Rolls Royce Wraith in the Supercar Paddock. Another proper Gent he wished me to have a great day. He was down to drive his 1967 Plymouth Belvedere GTX Nascar

Why is Lewis smiling?

What could have been. I asked Moss to sit next to the 1964 Ferrari 158. Had it not been for Moss's last accident he might well have joined with Ferrari.

Surtees took the opportunity and won a world championship with Ferrari in 1964.

Jack Brabham passed away recently but his son David was on hand to drive a Bentley GT3 racer.

Klaus Ludwig drove the Mercedes CLX GTR AMG from 1998. A Teutonic smile?

Jean Todt.

Emerson Fittipaldi, Todt and Lord March share a moment.

Deep in conversation...Ludwig, Weber, Dario.

Ludwig has said something to raise eyebrows.

Sir Jackie Stewart.

Gabriele Tarquini (Honda RA272) and Rene Arnoux (Renault RE40) right, compares IQs.

Rally driver Hannu Mikkola, (Audi Quattro S1).

Al Unser (1978 Lola Cosworth T500 First National City Special Indy car) and Andre Lotterer (2014 Audi R18 E Tron Quattro Le Mans).

Fittipaldi ready to climb the hill.

NASCAR comes to Sussex. Mike (the Gun slinger) Skinner (2004 Toyota Tundra Truck) and Kerry Earnhardt (2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo).

Jochan Mass chews the fat with the greatest living Lancastrian, Brian Redman, Brian is about to drive the 1969 Porsche 917 P/A from the Collier Collection

Kenny Brack in the long tail F1 GTR McLaren set the third fastest time of 47.52. In second place was Michael Bartels with a run of 45.82 in his Maserati MC12 which he had specially painted to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Maserati at Goodwood.

Rene Arnoux today.

Damon Hill.

Howden Ganley awaits his turn on the hill, his mount the Maki Cosworth F101A all the way from Japan. Maki was formed in Japan in 1974, the car appeared only occasionally and never managed to qualify for a race. The same fate befell their second attempt the F102.

15 times Motorcycle champ Giacomo Agostini.

John Surtees tries to make Kimi Raikkonen smile. Good luck.

Ever serious Sebastian Loeb. He is just about to attempt to break the hill record of 41.06 secs in the 875 BHP 875 Kg Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak car. Unfortunately he did not succeed but I am told he was clocked going past the house at 144 mph and he did set the fastest time of 44.60 secs at this year's event.

Tarquini gets the last laugh.

I was there with my son. Watched some superb driving on the hill and the rally course. Had a wonderful day and took many great photos. . . but these photos get closer to more of the drivers than we managed. Thank you.
