Daytona Beach, Florida.

The new Ferrari Grand Am 458 took part in a series of tests prior to the ‘Rolex 24-Hour Race’, the opening event of the American series, which will take place January 26 to 29 in Daytona, Florida.

The Risi Competizione team brought two Ferrari 458s to give its drivers a chance to familiarize themselves with the track and work on the set-up of the new car. The first crew is composed from Giancarlo Fisichella, Gianmaria Bruni and Brazilian Raphael Matos.
The second crew consisted of Monaco’s Olivier Beretta, Andrea Bertolini and the Finn Toni Vilander, all expert endurance race drivers.

Bertolini and Fisichella are involved with the Scuderia Ferrari in the development work on the car, and Bertolini has previously won four titles in the FIA GT Championship.

Finlander Toni Vilander gets the car and team ready for a bit of night racing.

The sessions went satisfactory apart from the fact that one of the drivers, Gimmi Bruni, was suffering with the ‘flu and was unable to drive the car that he’ll share with long term team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella and Brazil’s Raphael Matos.

Saturday, 7 January 2012, the Ferrari Italia 458s flexed their muscles, and Toni Vilander led the second session with a lap of 117.321 mph in the No. 63 Risi Competizione 458 Grand Am.

The Risi entry will be manned by Bruni, Fisichella and Matos.

“I really liked the track, and first impressions of the 458 are positive,” said Fisichella. “I’m happy because we are working in the right direction.”

Bertolini said: “It is my first time at Daytona and thanks to Vilander’s advice I managed to make significant progress. The most difficult part of the race will definitely be during the night, even if the lights are very effective. We are focusing a lot to provide information for the team so that it can deliver a winning car “.

The Waltrips have a horse of a different color at Daytona.

Also at Daytona with a Ferrari was the Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR). The team is fielding a Ferrari 458 GT for the prestigious Rolex 24 hours. The crew is composed by the veteran Rui Aguas and Rally America star Travis Pastrana who will join MWR owners Michael Waltrip and Rob Kauffman. Waltrip is one of Daytona’s most successful drivers on the oval having won two Daytona 500 victories in 2001 and 2003.

The team did not announce whether they will run any other Rolex Series events in 2012
