As we reported last week, the new Ferrari 458 Italia Grand Am would be tested at Daytona. The results were a positive debut for Italy 458 Grand Am, concluded after two days of testing at Daytona International Speedway’s track in Florida.
The new Ferrari, a collaboration between the Ferrari and Michelotto, completed over 90 laps, without recording any kind of problem and demonstrating good reliability, achieved thanks to the qualities inherited from the road car which were not lost in the changes to ready the car for participation in the North American series.
The 458 Grand Am Italy, headed by Team Ferrari of Fort Lauderdale, was characterized by the race number 27 a number that reminds fans of the legendary Gilles Villeneuve. The Italia appeared well-finished and looking very aggressive.
It was tested by the Brazilian driver Jaime Melo, back from a second-place finish with Risi Competizione Ferrari, and Raphael Matos, winner of the ‘Rolex 24 GT’ in 2008. On Wednesday, the two drivers added Guy Cosmo.
“This was an incredible experience, and I feel honored to be part of this test,” said Matos, “I was able to score good lap times and, along with Jaime we have collected a lot of information.”
The 458 Grand Am comes off the hallowed Daytona banking.
In an interview with reporters on the track, Antonello Coletta, Head of Ferrari Corse Clienti said “We are pleased with the performance of this car, especially considering the fact that, after the test took place at Fiorano, this is the first real test we have carried out. The exam was quite intense and, in the course of two days, we have completed about ninety revolutions without detecting any particular problems in its reliability. “
The 458 Grand Am is being readied for the 2012 Rolex Grand Am series in the US.
Ronnie Vogel, team principal of Team Ferrari of Fort Lauderdale, said: “We are planning to compete in the Rolex 24 with 2 cars, and we hope that the second car is delivered to us very soon” While the 458 Italy Fort Lauderdale Grand Am team was busy on the track, several team owners were present to learn more about the preparation of the car. The Ferrari F458 Italy Grand Am was built specifically for the Pearl GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series.

The return of the Ferrari will be one of the many attractions for next season and the 50th anniversary of the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona, the race to be held on 28-29 January 2012. It is expected that at Daytona there may be four to six F458 Italy Grand Ams on the grid. The Prancing Horse will then be able to write another chapter in their history with Daytona.

A Daytona la Ferrari 458 Italia Grand Am vola

Debutto positivo per la 458 Italia Grand Am che ha concluso due giorni di test sul tracciato del Daytona International Speedway, in Florida.
La nuova Ferrari, nata dalla collaborazione tra la Casa del Cavallino e Michelotto ha completato oltre 90 giri di pista, senza registrare nessun tipo di problema e dimostrando una buona affidabilità
Affidabilità ottenuta anche grazie alle qualità ereditate dal modello stradale da cui deriva e alle modifiche, non esasperate, cui la vettura è stata sottoposta per la partecipazione alla serie nord americana.
La 458 Italia Grand Am, affidata al Team Ferrari of Fort Lauderdale, era caratterizzata dal numero di gara ‘27’, numero che ai fans del Cavallino ricorda il mitico pilota Gilles Villeneuve, ed è apparsa ben rifinita e dall’aspetto decisamente aggressivo.
La 458 Italia Grand Am è stata collaudata dal pilota brasiliano Jaime Melo, reduce da un secondo posto ottenuto con la Ferrari di Risi Competizione, e da Raphael Matos, vincitore della ‘Rolex 24 GT’ nel 2008. Nella giornata di mercoledì, ai due piloti, si è aggiunto Guy Cosmo.
“Questa è stata un’esperienza incredibile, e mi sento onorato di far parte di questo test” ha detto Matos, “sono stato in grado di segnare dei buoni tempi sul giro e, assieme a Jamie abbiamo raccolto un sacco di informazioni”.
In una intervista rilasciata ai giornalisti presenti in pista, Antonello Coletta, Responsabile di Ferrari Corse Clienti ha detto “Siamo soddisfatti del rendimento di questa vettura, soprattutto in considerazione del fatto che, dopo la prova svolta a Fiorano, questo è il primo vero test che effettuiamo. L’esame è stato decisamente superato e, nel corso delle due giornate, abbiamo completato circa novanta giri senza rilevare particolari problemi nella sua affidabilità”.
Ronnie Vogel, team principal del Team Ferrari of Fort Lauderdale ha dichiarato “Stiamo progettando di partecipare alla Rolex 24 con 2 vetture, e speriamo che la seconda vettura ci venga consegnata molto presto”
Mentre la 458 Italia Grand Am del team Fort Lauderdale era impegnata in pista, diversi proprietari di scuderia erano presenti per capire lo stato di preparazione della vettura.
Ricordiamo che la Ferrari F458 Italia Grand Am è stata appositamente costruita perla GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series.
Il ritorno della Ferrari sarà quindi una delle tante attrattive, per la prossima stagione e per il 50° anniversario della Rolex 24 Ore di Daytona, gara che si terrà il 28-29 gennaio 2012.
Si prevede che a Daytona possano essere presenti da quattro a sei F458 Italia in allestimento Grand Am.
Per la Casa del Cavallino rampante ci sarà quindi la possibilità di scrivere un altro capitolo di storia.
Ricordiamo che il debutto della Ferrari a Daytona, risale alla gara inaugurale della ‘Daytona Continental’ nel 1962, gara che sfocerà in seguito nella Rolex 24.
In quella occasione, tra le 50 vetture iscritte, erano presenti nove Ferrari.
La Ferrari ha corso in 47 delle 49 edizioni della classica di durata, vincendo complessivamente cinque volte, e conquistando 15 vittorie di classe.
