A serious side of Goodwood is the study of historically accurate costumes that reflect the fifties and sixties.

The Background

During WWII, Goodwood was an airfield of the RAF. 70 years after the Battle of Britain, special tribute honoured all those who fought in the air and served on the ground to protect freedom. This of course is the Spitfire.

Now look what a fine mess you’ve gotten us into! Lest we forget these American comedians were really English—
Cars of Goodwood

The RAC TT Celebration race is the race of the weekend with the best drivers (Kristensen, Pirro, Rahal, Brundle) and wonderful GT cars. Here, Peter Hardman, in his particular style, is putting pressure on Bobby Verdon-Roe in the 330 LMB. Hardman and Frenchman Gounon, driving the Bamford 250 GTO were finally the overall winners.

It’s real racing at Goodwood but sometimes it’s too much. The Jag E-type of Derek Bell/Warburton and the Aston Martin DB4GT of Rauno Aaltonen/Lord Drayson meet unexpectedly.

Jo Vonlanthen, from Switzerland, had some troubles with his 1952 Ferrari 500/625. Unfortunately he was unable to take part in the Richmond Trophy race for front engined Grand Prix cars.
the girl with the blue fender looks like a TVR grantura.
> jack
Probably goes without actually saying: After viewing the foregoing, I’m at a loss for words.
Ugly legs.
What a damage for so nice cars: less than a bad circus.
In Europa, we have a tradition for nice cars, a prt of our history.
Such a milkshake, we don’t do.
In every country in Europa.
Poor Europa ?
The girl with the blue fender looks far better than any TVR! And the fender is Sprite based, either WSM-GT or Sprinzel. The Fordwater field appears to contain far more Sprite specials than were made in period…..Love the slip angle Hardman is making with the GTO.
I seem to have heard that these fine girls were brought over from Paris for the occasion!?
Not so. A-L (red dress w/ white hearts) is among the UK’s finest.
Cheers
The blue fender is from a 1961 Austin Healey Speedwell Sprite.
I would think they’re relatively local women. I was there in 2005 with my (now) ex, and on the second day we found ourselves riding the train back to London with Marilyn. She was still dressed up, but definitely no longer in character.
Can’t wait to go again!
What blue fender?
I wish more events in the U.S. would promote the idea of wearing period correct clothing. That way those of us who can’t afford at the moment to have a car ready for the grid can at least wear that old English suit, or wool sweater with plus fours, trilby and of course where else would a guy have the nerve to wear an ascot tie (the only people I saw wearing them in the UK were Germans who thought that’s what English swells wore…) I remember seeing a photo of Lord March’s daughter in a WWII wren uniform, that must have brought memories back to the old folks, so I hope this can be promoted in America , nostalgia doesn’t just come on four wheels, y’know.
Charlie Lucas, Piers Courage, and, ahem, I, all wore ascots in the sixties.
