Goodwood is people too, and it provides a wonderful opportunity to talk to the legends up close and personal.
I had the pleasure escorting Jackie Stewart to the Mercedes-Benz W196; it could not be seen through the throngs of people, but I had seen it arrive. So being a gentleman I stepped in to help, wouldn’t you?
There was a great conversation between Julian Majzub who was driving his 1914 Sunbeam Indianapolis car and Nelson Piquet; for contrast nothing could compare. Piquet, when asked if he had driven the Goodwood Motor Racing circuit replied he had done about a 1000 laps testing the Braham BT52. He mentioned (when he told Lord March this at the party I think Lord March went white) that he had lapped the circuit in less than a minute. The circuit length is 2.6 miles. 1200 HP came in handy then.
I listened to Ricardo Patrese describing to Stefano Macaluso (using mainly hand gestures) how the Lancia LC1 flipped on him, the car now being right next to him. Jackie Ickx, Rene Arnoux, Jean Ragnoti and Henri Pescarolo were catching up on old times together; well, I think they were but of course the conversation was in French.
Michael Waltrip, Robert Kaufman and Sir Stirling Moss were chewing the fat next to the Mercedes 300 SLR and then the two NASCAR boys took Sir Stirling over to their NASCAR racers and gave him a rundown of the relative merits; that moment was priceless.
For those of us who stayed for the prize giving rather than sit in traffic, were treated to a glass of champagne and a small Concert by the Eagles Guitarist Don Felder in the marquee behind Goodwood House, which topped off the four day event quite nicely!

It does make a refreshing change to see the focus on the people, the stars, rather than just the cars for a change. Thanks for some great photos. Nice to see all the greats there. Sir Stirling and Jacky Ickx are both top ranked drivers. Alain, Damon, Nelson and Sir Jackie are all ex-World Champions, so is it significant that while they all know how to age gracefully it is Rene Arnoux who can never decide what colour his hair should be. Back when F1 drivers were a diverse bunch, and many took their every move so seriously, it was good to have Rene and Nelson around the paddock; they knew how to have a laugh.
