Hugues Vanhoolandt at Monterey

September 1, 2009 By hugues

After winning Best of Show Award at Carmel on Tuesday, Jon Shirley and his 250 TR s/n 0666 had a moment in the corkscrew on Saturday.

With Porsche as the featured marque at this year’s 36th Monterey Historic Automobile Races, and more than 145 cars from Stuttgart on a field of 450 race cars, non-Porsche fans could fear to be bored. But, as always at the Monterey Historics, there was enough for everyone, French and Italian enthusiasts included. Here is my selection for VeloceToday.

Only once was a Porsche 917 beaten by a Ferrari 512 S. It was at Sebring in 1970 thanks to Giunti, Vaccarella and Andretti.

1963 Rene Bonnet Djet with a 1296 cc engine. Rene Bonnet sold out to Matra who continued to produce the Djet.

This French Cottin-Desgouttes of 1911 has a displacement of no less than 10,500 cc and finished 17th in the 1904-1940 Sporting cars class in which the smallest car had 850 cc (Austin 7 Special).

The Mullins team was out in force with a 1938 Talbot Lago 26 SS, 1946 Delage D6 and a pair of Bugattis.

The ex-Ecurie Belgique 1949 Talbot-Lago Type 26 (s/n 110 006), failed to sell at Bonhams auction.

1952 Siata 300 BC was 3rd in class and 20th OA at the 1953 Sebring has been raced by Marty Stein, of Jackson, CA for more than 20 years. HM by the number means Class H, Modified, an SCCA class system.

1954 750 cc Nardi Crosley-Nardi frame and body with an American four cylinder, SOHC engine from the Crosely sedan.

1939 Alfa Romeo 6C-2500 SS of Conrad Stevenson (1925-1949 Racing & Sporting cars class). Note the Alfa service van behind the 6C 2500.

Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/2 Daytona s/n 015 was raced in 1968 by Autodelta and in 1969 by VDS Team. It’s a two times 24 h of Le Mans entry and it finished 6th at 1968 Daytona 24 hrs on its maiden outing with Andretti/Bianchi.

1958 Giulietta Spider of Jon Goodman.

1960 Giulia Sprint Zagato, Kaid Marouf.

Why is a Lister in VeloceToday? It has a 2 liter-Maserati engine.

Maserati A6GCS (s/n 2078), of Dean Meiling, 3rd in the same race.

Maserati Birdcage, s/n 2461 of Carl Moore.

Antony Wangs Birdcage, s/n 2452.

Art expert Leigh Keno entered his Ferrari 512 BB LM s/n 29511 in the 1973-1980 IMSA GT class.

1958 Ferrari 335 S s/n 0764 of Bruce McCaw, Bellevue, WA.

1958 Ferrari 250 TR s/n 0754 TR of David Love, San Rafael, CA before his off.

Shirley again, just starting to break the rear end loose.
