This year, the Festival of Speed was celebrating motorsport’s record breakers, and among them Michael Schumacher. In addition, the Bentley Centenary, 70 years of Aston Martin at Goodwood, as well as fifty years of a car with a cult following like no other, the Porsche 917, were featured this year.

New De Tomaso P72 Debuts

July 16, 2019 By pete

By Wallace Wyss

It’s so beautiful, you want to get closer. The interior out Paganis Pagani, it’s so rococo and SteamPunk.

It’s got a Ferrari V12.

The De Tomaso P72 street car made its debut at the Goodwood event a few days ago and was not just a static display—it went out there and buzzed the track, singing the siren song of the V12. Then, crap hit the fan as the anguished cries from the folks that spent a good deal of money to revive this shape a few years ago called out the Apollo De Tomaso as a copycat. And do you blame them?

Goodwood Driver’s Gallery

July 16, 2019 By pete

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

As is our custom with the Goodwood Festival of Speed, (this year held on July 6-7) we hung out in the paddock and photographed drivers as well as cars. There are few events where the young rising stars get to mingle with the older drivers and the atmosphere is always friendly.

It is probably my age but thank heavens the younger drivers have their names on the waist bands of the race suits as I would be struggling, like many other photographers of my age, to know who they are. [Read more…] about Goodwood Driver’s Gallery

Ballot 5/8 LC, 3/8 LC, 2 LS

Last week Hugues presented his coverage of the classics at Chantilly. But the editor decided to delete a number of photos from the selection in order to create a special, if short, article about Ballots. How often does one see a Ballot at an event? Rarely. So this is a special occasion, timed for not only the 100th anniversary of the Ballot marque, but the publication of Ballot by Daniel Cabart and Gautam Sen, published by Dalton Watson. The information below is taken from this fantastic new book. [Read more…] about Ballot 5/8 LC, 3/8 LC, 2 LS

Peter Giddings: A Celebration of Life

July 2, 2019 By pete

By Judy Giddings

On April 11, 2019 a Celebration of Life was held for Peter Giddings at the Sonoma Raceway, where a very nice booklet was distributed to the many attendees. It was lovingly put together by Judy Giddings, a series of stories about her “50 years with Peter Giddings,” showing a personal side of Peter few have known. She sent VeloceToday a copy and we edited it for our readers. We also thank the Giddings’ website manager Mike Sims for his help with the photos. Part 1 of 2.

An exciting beginning

My 50 years with Peter Giddings all started at a typical late 1960s London party. However, there was never anything typical about Peter. He was tall, handsome, and suave – also very intelligent, confident, knowledgeable on so many subjects, and most important of all, a good sense of humor. Peter picked me up for our first date in his blower Bentley, complete with a blanket to keep out the cold and dampness of the London winter evening.

Forlorn Ferraris…Ok, that’s a good word. Forlorn, meaning neglected, pitiful, lost…..yet not too mean, like ugly, oddball or oddity.
