Mystery Car Unraveled

May 20, 2014 By pete

Side view of our Mystery Car...the photographer couldn't recall the name of the car or what year, but he did remember his girlfriend, who is standing behind it.

Sometimes, it’s still fun….

Today we have almost dozens of books about rare Italian cars; multiple Internet sources which leave no digit unmolested, no photo left unseen; dozens of seasoned veterans with years of experience identifying, finding, buying, and selling rare Italian cars, and then wonderful resources for information such as the REVS and IMRRC.
All of this means that there are few true mystery cars left out there – the wealth of resources has taken much of the fun away from finding a photo of a car one can’t identify.

Still, once in a while one comes up that we find it hard to figure. When this happens, we put the image up on VeloceToday and we are sure to find the right answer. Or so we hope.

Gauld at the Monaco Historics

May 13, 2014 By pete

Derek Hill sits in the Ferrari Dino his dad Phil used to win the Italian Grand Prix fifty-four years ago.

Story and Photos by Graham Gauld

You have got to hand it to them; the Monaco Automobile Club put on a real spectacle with their bi-annual Monaco Historic event held last weekend. Monaco has been a gem in on the International racing scene since 1927 when William-Grover Williams, an Englishman in Monaco, won the first Monaco Grand Prix in his Bugatti. This week it was time to forget about the modern computers on wheels that are todays F1 cars and wallow in the nostalgia of racing in the past. The Monaco event always attracts interesting cars and people; let’s meet some of them. [Read more…] about Gauld at the Monaco Historics

Racing Voiturettes, 1931-1940

May 13, 2014 By pete

The voiturette (750cc, 1100 cc and 1500cc) races which took place between 1931 and 1940 were magic; technically interesting cars, around the house race venues, truly international with multi-make participation, a cast of characters from a Siamese Prince to Enzo Ferrari, Dick Seaman’s drives with the ERA, MG and Delage, and a devastating secret weapon unleashed by Mercedes Benz which defeated and demoralized the opposition. There was never a dull moment on or off the track. [Read more…] about Racing Voiturettes, 1931-1940

Milan Autoclassica 2014

May 13, 2014 By Gerelli

Fiat 500 Club Italia with love.

Story and Photos by Alessandro Gerelli

This is a rather new event for Milano, the city which will host the World Expo 2015. But every year the success grows and the number and quality of the cars increases. The 2014 show featured more car restorers, many dealers and the usual owner clubs.

Notably, I have seen a lot of old Italian cars. But at this show, I found a few I had never seen before!

Brooklands Italian Car Day

May 13, 2014 By pete

The Pininfarina lines of a Fiat Dino Spyder contrast nicely with the starkness of the Brooklands memorial erected to commemorate the home of motor racing 1907 - 1939.

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

Judging by the three lines of cars, all of which were made in Italy, waiting to pass through the Campbell gate of the Brooklands Motor Circuit in Surrey, the Italian car community is alive and thriving. [Read more…] about Brooklands Italian Car Day

Louis Bionier, French Designer, Part 4

Panhard's last stand.

Read Part 3

The mighty influence of Citroën (minority shareholder but major client) in the running of Panhard became most apparent when the Panhard management in 1959 started to plan a successor of their PL 17. Monsieur Pierre Bercot, Citroën’s boss, made it clear to Jean Panhard that they would not support the Panhard Company to invest in the development of a new mid-sized ‘berline’ (four door sedan). His argument was that Citroën was shortly going to introduce the Ami, an upgraded version on the platform of the 2CV and was already working on a totally new mid-sized model (the GS) to be launched in 1970. It would be a folly to compete with each other in this segment.

Sharp at the VSCC Silverstone

April 29, 2014 By pete

Lancia D50 recreation of Helmut Gassmann.

Whilst Graham Gauld was meeting and greeting at the VSCC Spring Start race meeting at Silverstone, Jonathan Sharp was there scooting around with his camera to bring you the following report:

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

My passion has always been for Italian cars but sometimes I like to go off script; so the idea of an ERA-only race to celebrate its 80th anniversary of the (which will be covered separately) plus various support races, plus a scattering of their period adversaries including a few Maserati’s and Bugattis, was simply too much to miss.
