Vanhoolandt Eyes the Auctions

September 12, 2013 By hugues

One of the many world records of the week was the sale for $27,500,000 of the Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spider s/n 10709, all proceeds donated to charitable causes. It is the second most expensive car ever to be sold at public auction.

Story and photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

Monterey madness week is not only about Concours d’Elégance, Car club reunions, races at Laguna Seca,Tours on the Monterey Peninsula or social events. It is, for an increasing number, all about auctions. We will not list here all the world record prices broken during these sales but just take a subjective look at some interesting cars. proposed to the sale. Targa Adelaide, South Australia

September 12, 2013 By vack

Spectators enjoy the Gambino/Hugues 308GTB at Basket Range.

Targa Adelaide, South Australia, 21-25 August 2013

Story and Photos by Vince Johnson unless otherwise noted.

When Jason and John White’s Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera suffered differential problems on the second day of the Targa Adelaide, the chances of them repeating last year’s win were always going to be slim. Nissan driver Steve Glenney, with Bernie Webb navigating, put his knowledge of the South Australian hills roads to good use, taking the lead early and was never headed.

Coppa D’Oro Delle Dolomiti (Cortina) 2013

September 12, 2013 By Gerelli

A nice view of the mountains near Cortina and the Osca 372 FS.

Coppa D’Oro Delle Dolomiti, August 29th-September 1st 2013

Giuliano Canè is an Italian driver who has won many historical Mille Miglia and seven editions of the Coppa d’Oro. In an interview with a local newspaper, he said that the Coppa d’Oro in the 90s was at the same level as the Mille Miglia in terms of number of participants and even more qualified for drivers and cars. I remember in late 80s, I saw a man whose name is Mauro Forghieri changing the plugs of a Testarossa: what a dream! [Read more…] about Coppa D’Oro Delle Dolomiti (Cortina) 2013

Brandes Elitch at The Quail

September 12, 2013 By Brandy

Story by Brandes Elitch

The Monterey weekend is so overwhelming that it is impossible to capture more than a small part of it here. Two reasonable and sophisticated car collectors might come back with two completely different versions of what they saw that mattered to them, and in listening to them you would wonder if they were in the same place. All of us have our biases and predilections, and oftentimes we just search out what we already favor, without being distracted by something new. This is human nature.

VeloceToday Select Number One:
Cuban Grand Prix, 1957

by David Seielstad

Mystery of the Maserati 300S…The serial number of the 1957 Cuban Grand Prix-winning Maserati 300S has long been a mystery. David Seielstad, author of VeloceToday’s The Cuban Grand Prix 1957 found a notice in the French Maserati Club’s newsletter that may shed some light on this famous car. “This theory makes sense, since the car was in South America and could have been shipped or flown to Cuba without the NY dock strike affecting it,” said Seielstad. The newsletter reported that in January of 1957, s/n 3067 was shipped to race in Buenos Aires Grand Prix. In February Fangio’s manager, M. Gambiertone, had the car shipped to Cuba at the last minute. Read about s/n 3067’s victory in the hands of Juan Manuel Fangio in this VeloceToday Select Portfolio.

Michael T. Lynch at Pebble Beach 2013

September 5, 2013 By Lynch

One of the things that make the Pebble Beach Concours unique is its special displays. The organizers are able to present exhibitions of exotica no other event can manage. One of them was a group of cars bodied by Carrosserie Vanvooren. Founded by Achille Vanvooren in suburban Paris in 1910, the firm was taken over in 1919 by Marius Daste, who guided it through its golden era of the 20s and 30s when it became known for its high quality work on luxury marques, especially Bugatti, Delage, Rolls/Bentley and Hispano Suiza. The French arm of the last company was not far from the Vanvrooen atelier. The magnificent H-S seen here is a J12 Vanvooren Cabriolet entered by Robert M. Lee. Note the sophisticated shape that belies the size of the car and the contrasting coachlines that stand in relief from the remainder of the body. Five of the eight entries in the class were Hispano-Suizas. Credit MTL

CMC Shannons Sydney Classics, August 18th

September 5, 2013 By pete

Monterey antidote; Shannons Sydney Classic presented a little of everything. Virtually unknown in the U.S. is the Renault Fregate.

By Chris Martin

Sunday August 18th 2013

The Council of Motor Clubs (NSW) is an organization that represents 160 affiliated clubs in dealing with government legislation and the registration authority, and is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. I guess they didn’t have a show the first year as this was the 49th annual CMC Classic. Held at Sydney MotorSport Park – formerly known as Eastern Creek Raceway and supported by Shannons Insurance, this annual event has grown to where it now has close to 2,000 vehicles on display, from all classes of the hobby; so it is normal to find a Mustang or Messerschmitt, a Lambretta, a Lamborghini or a London double-decker bus, veterans and moderns all mixed in around the park. Dear Editor,

Automobilia was the first event I rolled into, which starts Tuesday morning of “car week” and is held in the Embassy Suites hotel in Seaside. This event has at least 30 vendors and they all bring their specialties. Some bring out of print books (I was shocked when the vendor next to my booth told me he sold three books for over $1400 each!). Some bring older posters both pre-war and post-war; there was a vendor from England with original photographs that he was proud to say “weren’t digital.” A few sell car bits, like the fellow next to me selling Rolls Royce radiator ornaments.

And then some were selling clothes that were either copying old pre-war racing clothing or in the spirit of sports car clothing. I had my own booth vending the brand spanking new Incredible Barn Finds and was pleased when, on the second day of the event, I met people who’d bought one the first day and were enthusiastic to finish it.

Go ahead, make my day. Wyss gets the nod from Leno.
