Early in the afternoon of Sunday, October 21, Porto Cervo hosted the celebrations for the victory of  Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen in the Rally Italy Sardinia 2012.

The rally was organized by the Automobile Club of Italy with the support of the Region of Sardinia. It was planned along a 1241 km route, which crossed the northern part of Sardinia. During the competition, the drivers tackled more than 300 km of speed tests, divided into 16 timed sections.

Third Annual Zoute Grand Prix, Belgium

October 5-7, 2012

For the third consecutive year, the city of Knokke in Belgium presented the Zoute Grand Prix, consisting of a two day rally for cars built between 1920 and 1965, plus a Concours d’Elégance and a Parade of modern GT and Supercars.

Knokke is a chic resort on the Belgian coast about ten miles away from Bruges. Often called the Venice of the North, it is one of the best-preserved medieval cities with over 600 years of history.

The Zoute Grand Prix is growing every year and in 2013, a vintage car auction held by Bonhams is to be added to the activities.

Despite the damp conditions, the rally drew 150 participants who traveled more than 160 miles per day on the picturesque roads of Flanders. On each day, the start and arrival point was located at the King Albert Place at Knokke-le-Zoute.

The sun was back for the Concours d’Elégance held on the Fairway 1 of the Royal Zoute Golf Club. Many classic automobiles from the major Belgian and Dutch collections were on display. More information can be found at Zoutegrandprix.be

Here are a few of the images from the weekend.

Despite the damp conditions of the rally, this Delahaye 135 is having a good run.

Fast Tracking the New Fiat Abarth

October 17, 2012 By pete

By Brian Winer

A VT contributor recently drove a Fiat 500c but admitted later that the speed was lackluster because he failed to press the “Sport” button. Recently, I rectified that by not only driving a 2013 Fiat 500 Abarth hatchback, but driving the diminutive car on a race track at the limits of the tires, the car, and the driver.

The occasion was the annual Track Days sponsored by the Motor Press Guild. These track tests are a little like speed dating—five minutes to get to know each gal. You tend to like the last one you were with, until the next one. During the busy day, we also were able to test drive the Fiat Abarth’s competition so were able to get some idea of where the new Fiat stood with its peers.

In 2013 the Crayola Company will celebrate the 110th anniversary of the introduction of their eponymous crayon. Ever since then, kids all over the world have enjoyed creating their masterworks of art while drawing with Crayolas. But recently, I was blown away when I saw those crayons used for a sculpture! Stanley Cohen, an attorney in West Hartford, Connecticut recently commissioned a work of art using Crayola crayons in a most unusual way.

Korean Grand Prix 2012: Red Bull Rising

Red Bull Rising...

Coming four days after a strong performance in Suzuka the previous weekend, and in parts thanks to a new “Double DRS” device, the Red Bull team arrived in Korea on Thursday as the favorites. Fans of the three other leading teams, especially Ferrari and McLaren, were hoping for a magic aero trick out of the proverbial magic bag. It was not to be. Still, the Korean race had plenty of intense moments.

Prescott: The Climb and the Cars

Bugatti Brescia

Bugattis enjoy a rare moment of sun. David Hand's 1925 T39 sits next to the 1924 Brescia T13 of Charles Knill-Jones.

The Cotswolds: bucolic golden-hued thatched cottages, rolling farm land, wheat fields swaying in a warm summer breeze, antique shops, old English country inns selling fine English ales. All this and more, for it is also the home of the Bugatti Owners Club of Great Britain and the famous Prescott Hill climb.

Cheltenham is near Gloucester, Prescott Hill 5 miles northwest.

Let’s put this place on the map: Prescott Hill Climb, based five miles northwest of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire consist of 60 partly wooded acres, with a beautiful private drive of about 1127 yards (.64 mile) in length.

Overhead shot of Prescott, wouldn't it be lovely. and it is.

The course rises over 200 feet with a combination of short straights, fast and slow corners and a breathtaking hairpin. Today’s supermachines get up the hill in about 36 seconds. The old ones take a lot longer but are more fun to watch. Each year Prescott hosts a variety of annual events ranging from the “Le Vie en Bleu,” a celebration of French cars, to the Autumn Classic, open to American automobiles.

Track Diagram corresponds well with the overhead photo.

His dad Pierre took third place at Le Mans in the 60s with a Ferrari SWB; now Gregory Noblet races this 275GTB. Noblet is a VeloceToday reader, of course!

Probably most people reading this have never heard of Patrick Peter, but he is one of those race organizers who always comes up with some good ideas. He tried out one of them last weekend at his huge Dix Mille Tours historic meeting in the sunshine of Paul Ricard in the South of France.

Vince Johnson, our intrepid correspondent from Down Under, recently reminded the Editor of the up and coming third annual Motorclassica event to be held in Melbourne on October 26-28th. Always ready to make sure our growing number of readers Down Under are aware of events, we thought we’d do a preview. Vince told us that the ex-Twiggy Lamborghini Miura S would be up for auction at the same event. There was the lead-in we were looking for!

Japanese Grand Prix 2012

Massa all the way.

For what was a yawn of a race, the Japanese Grand Prix has certainly set up an exciting end to the 2012 Grand Prix season. That’s great for fans, Ecclestone, Red Bull, winner Vettel and the remaining five races on the calendar.

Not so good for Ferrari and Alonso, who is now going to have to fight tooth and nail for another crown. After being knocked out in Japan, Alonso is now a mere four points in front of Vettel for the World Championship. Every race, every position will now count heavily and each race may be a nail-biter.

LOEB AND ELENA OVER THE TOP

Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena have won their ninth consecutive World Rally Championship, and their eighth World Constructors Championship crown with Citroën.

Loeb could have afforded the luxury of not winning this race and still have won the championship but as expected, the number loyal fans who came to encourage him from every part of France meant Loeb may as well have had wings on his feet. And he did.
