In 2012, Dennis Shoff and Dave Rex found a 1952 road race special named the “Comet” in the back of a race shop at Virginia International Raceway, and purchased it from fellow vintage racer Larry Narcus, who had restored the car and gathered some of the car’s history including contact information for the car’s ex-owner and driver, Glen Glendenning. Story by Brandes Elitch

A few weeks ago, Brandes Elitch started a good deal of controversy with his list of Top Ten Sports Cars, which concentrated on post WWII makes. Sean Smith then countered with his own list and Elitch then came up with his idea of the Top Ten Pre War Sports Cars, below.

After 240 days of closure, the West Australian border finally opened up to Victorians on 8 December 2020. The West Australian Alpine and Renault owners had been teasing us out East with their Classic Cars & Coffee displays ever since the rest of Australia went into lockdown. So with a window of opportunity opening up over Christmas/New Year, a trip to Perth was booked to check out the CC&C display on 27 December in Perth and catch up with a few friends.

Fiat 1100 Part 4

January 26, 2021 By pete

The three versions of their Nuovo 1100: The Berlina, the Familiare and the more sporting TV (Turismo Veloce), recognizable by the extra lamp mounted in center of the radiator grill. Photo courtesy Fiat.

Story by Gijsbert-Paul Berk and friends

In the continuing saga of the Fiat 1100, Gijsbert-Paul Berk presents the line of 1089 cc Fiats from the 1953 Nuovo 103 to the final variant, the 1969 1100 R.

The postwar European economic boom created demand for workers in the industrialized triangle between the cities of Milan, Turin and Genoa. Around 9 million Italians moved from poor rural and mainly agricultural areas to find employment there. During those years, the Italian GPD grew with an average of 5.8% per year, very close to the German growth rate; the purchasing power of the population rose accordingly.

Introducing a New Feature in VeloceToday

January 19, 2021 By pete

Introducing a new series of articles in VeloceToday.

By Staff

From now on, whenever you see the artfully constructed banner above in VeloceToday (thanks to Jodi Ellis), you know that you will be in for a treat. Think of the banner as a sub-website, a book or huge folder, or simply a cornucopia of great articles that fall under the heading of The Sports Car Craze that Changed America. The Inspirational Berlinetta

The 1938 Alfa 2.9 Touring Berlinetta is the car that provided the inspiration for Paul Wilson’s lifelong dream to build his own body on a 6C2500 chassis. The lines, the long hood, the perfect proportions and the sheer drama of the Touring design were duly noted by a young Wilson, even as he researched a savory variety of both French and Italian prewar coachbuilders. (See Part 1). [Read more…] about Five Alfa 2.9 Berlinettas

Top Ten Frenzy: Sean Smith Makes his List

January 19, 2021 By pete

Story and photos by Sean Smith

I enjoyed the Top 10 Sports car list. It was very brave of Brandes Elitch to make his opinion known. This started me thinking of my Top 10 list. It was interesting; we only agreed on one specific car and agreed on several marques, but different models and from different decades. (

Fiat 1100S

While Pierre Dusio was making a huge impact with his 1100 Fiat-powered Cisitalias, back at Fiat they weren’t idle and eager to return to some normalcy. As early as 1947 the Fiat 1100 S sports coupe made its appearance and was an immediate success, both in term of sales and results.

The world is changing and we are experiencing a tough time. I live in Milano, and respect for the rules is essential; like many others, I live pretty much in self quarantine. Like most people, I have some moments of a little anguish so, to think of something more pleasant, I decided to reorder my archive.

Top Ten Postwar Sportscars

January 12, 2021 By pete

Opinion by Brandes Elitch
Photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

Recently a newsstand “car guy” publication published an article titled “Ten Best Sportscars.” Fully a third of their choices were certainly not sports cars in any sense: a four door BMW sedan, a Japanese mainstream family car (Acura), and a McLaren FI, which by its name confirms that it is first and foremost a race car. This article was so off the mark that I have been getting emails asking me to come up with my own Top Ten list, which follows. [Read more…] about Top Ten Postwar Sportscars

Fiat 1100 Part 2

January 12, 2021 By pete

Cisitalia is the acronym of “Compagnia Industriale Sportiva Italia”, the official name of the conglomerate of Piero Dusio’s business ventures. The logo, a stylistic Alpine goat (Capra ibex), was also an idea of Dusio, because these animals are reputed for their courage, speed and agility. The colors he chose – blue and gold – are those of the city of Turin. At right, the first batch of the Cisitalia D46 racing cars.

Story by Gijsbert-Paul Berk

The name Cisitalia is inseparably linked to that of Piero Dusio. This Turinese sportsman, racing driver and entrepreneur was president of Juventus, Turin´s successful football (soccer) club and founder of the Scuderia Torino. His business enterprises were registered as Consorzio Industriale Sportivo Italia. Indeed: CISItalia! The business conglomerate included textile mills, a trading house, a bank, many hotels, sportswear manufacturing and bicycles. [Read more…] about Fiat 1100 Part 2
