San Marino is a toney area of town near Pasadena but redolent of gentler times where there are no loud noises and no graffiti; a town that presents a kind of isolated feeling like nearby Santa Anita racetrack which makes you feel like you are back in the 1930s.
The show takes place in beautiful Lacy Park, and is formally titled the San Marino Motor Classic.
The event is presented by Rusnak Auto Group and this year brought approximately 4,000 spectators and 250 classic and modern cars. The Best in Show went to Barry Hon’s 1938 Alfa Romeo 2300B. The Art Center College of Design award (the college trains many of the car industry’s designers) went to an absolutely stunning silver 1962 Ferrari 250 SWB.
Winner of the Garage Style Magazine Trophy was a 1952 Siata 300BC/ST420, one of two Siatas in the event.
This writer found a really interesting (barn find) car to be a Hispano Suiza town car (open chauffer’s compartment up front) because of the owner’s tale of finding the decrepit car parked outside in Florida. We hope to tell VT readers in a future story how he restored the body when the crumbling wooden support for the body was rotten underneath.
Receiving the Chairman’s Award went to the Malumet collection of micro cars, including Messerschmitts and the like. The Meguiar’s wax company gave their award for fit and finish to a 1939 Alfa C62500.
There were at least two Delahayes there, one won the “Car Matters” award from the Historical Vehicle Association.
Receiving a Special Award for Most Elegant European Open Pre-War (CCCA) was a 1936 Delahaye Convertible Coupe.
The chief Judge’s award was won by a 1965 Alfa SS.
We talked to the owner of a replica GTA, a former Alfa mechanic who had gone to considerable trouble to make a regular GTV look like an Alfa GTA with great workmanship. That was the only “replica” we spotted, although it was still a real Alfa.
There were some new cars on display (Aston was one brand; Cadillac another), but these were over at the side near the vendor’s booths, so they weren’t distracting from the show, and of course these are necessary to pay the freight for all the expenses of such a show.
Overall, the San Marino show has the potential of being a world-class concours with pretty tight standards on what it allows in; and the event is presented in a nice, serene location with the San Gabriel Mountains forming the backdrop. As far as the eternally asked question, “Which of the concours in South California can be considered the “Pebble Beach of the South?”: This one has a genteel atmosphere and high quality cars, so it scores high potentiality for that description. Although it’s hard to beat the Palos Verdes view of the sea at the Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance.
