Sue Dixon and the Barn Find Alfa

April 24, 2023 By pete

We recently learned that Sue Dixon passed away on February 20 of this year. With our sincere condolences to her friends and family, we republish the below story written by Sue Dixon and Keith Goring in 2013. It was part two of a three part series on the life of this Alfa Sprint.

The Alfa According to Sue Dixon

[Around 1977, the Editor found an Alfa Veloce in an old barn in Tidewater Virginia, and called Alfas Unlimited in Connecticut to ask if they wanted it. Sue Dixon picks up the story as they trade a Lancia for the Barn Find Alfa. -Ed.]

We had met Pete Vack in the mid-seventies when he and a bunch of his buddies were part of an informal car club in the Virginia Beach area. They had bought the leftovers of an old Alfa dealership and advertised the parts in Hemmings, as it was about the only places to sell anything sportscar related in those days.

We met Kyle Fleming, Bill Jones, John Sheally, and several others down there who managed to do stuff with cars, even though there were no major tracks close by. It was surprising how many Alfas, Lancias, Ferraris and other interesting cars could be found in Tidewater, no doubt because of all the military people who had brought cars over from Europe for next to nothing. Alfas, Lancias and the VSCCA

March 12, 2019 By pete

Story by Sean Smith

Santo Spadaro’s first car was a Lancia D50 Grand Prix car, but at only 3 years old, it was one he could hold in his hand. The racer was clutched in his hand while he sat in the grandstand at Watkins Glen with his family watching the full-size racers do battle.

Alfa Finds a New Life, Part 3

April 18, 2013 By pete

By Pete Vack

The Editor wraps up the story of the Alfa Find with the help of Brighton Motors, Dr. Peter Fodor, Matt at Re-Originals, and current owner Frank Allocca.

As we have seen, the Alfa found in a horse barn in 1977 passed quickly from the editor to the home of Alfas Unlimited in Norfolk CT., where Keith Goring and Sue Dixon decided to make a vintage race car out of the engineless Alfa. The Sprint Veloce would stay with them until in 2007 when they finally gave up the old workhorse race car and sold it.

Alfa Find Story Part 2: From Horsebarn to Horsepower

April 11, 2013 By pete

This week we continue our story of the Alfa Find as it is taken from horse barn to horsepower at Alfas Unlimited. Sue Dixon picks up where we left off, telling the tale from her perspective. Then Keith Goring recalls getting it ready to race once again.

Alfa Find Part 1

April 4, 2013 By pete

By Pete Vack

It’s funny how we manage to remember dates. By the looks of the tags on the Chevy station wagon, it appears to have been 1977. Or maybe 1976, it’s hard to tell. But I also know that Michael Frostick’s “Lancia” book had just been published by Dalton Watson and that was in 1976. I had just received my copy when Keith and Sue arrived and was eager to show it to them, so it must have been 1977.
