Story and photos by Vince Johnson

The last month of spring in the South Australian state capital saw road racing in full swing.
Over three days the Shannons Adelaide Rally brought together entrants in road-registered touring and sports cars in the surrounding hills, alongside competitors in dedicated rally vehicles for almost 150 kilometres (93mi) of special stages on closed roads to die for. Normally there’s just one Shannons Adelaide Rally in South Australia each year. As we all know, last year was far from normal, but it did have a silver lining. It meant that this year there were two. The 2020 Rally was held earlier, in March (see VT April 12, 2021), and the ‘real’ 2021 Rally just last month.

Shannons Adelaide Rally, South Australia, 24-27 March 2021

Story and photos by Vince Johnson

Originally planned for the second half of 2020, the Shannons Adelaide Rally, like many worldwide, was another casualty of the pandemic. Towards the end of the year, when the lights at the end of the tunnel were shining again in South Australia, late summer seemed an ideal time to run the postponed event. Over fifty entrants came from interstate, braving the uncertainty of lockdowns or quarantine. As it turned out, not all the roads were dry during the four-day meeting, but this didn’t deter competitors and results were in doubt until the final stages on Saturday.

December’s annual motorsport festival in South Australia’s capital kicked off on the 4th with the Adelaide Rally scrutineering and drivers’ briefings. Parc Ferme was at the Wayville Showgrounds and competition cars left on Wednesday for seven closed-road special stages south of the city. Entries in the Competition category were split into classic and modern classes. Within the Classic Competition class, crews also competed for the Heritage Trophy, with a handicap system based on each car’s actual engine capacity and the vehicle’s standard, unmodified weight. Adelaide Motorsports Festival, South Australia

February 6, 2018 By pete

Story and Photos by Vince Johnson

The fourth Adelaide Motorsport Festival attracted record crowds in the South Australian capital on december 7-10. Perhaps it had something to do with the promotional video (https://www.adelaidemotorsportfestival.com.au/spectators/race-to-the-city), but more likely the event’s reputation now precedes it with a vengeance. Nine Formula 1 cars from the 80’s and 90’s vied for the lap record over the weekend, bringing back memories of the Grand Prix days on the Victoria Park section of the old circuit.

The first competitive hillclimb in South Australia, held in 1904 on the Norton Summit Road, was won by Ernest Rymill in his 15hp Darracq. The following year he made it two in a row. Sadly, Rymill’s Darracq wasn’t in the Barossa Valley this year for the Sporting Car Club of SA’s Vintage Collingrove, although the French were admirably represented by local stalwart Richard Creasy’s slightly younger Amilcar G.

Richard purchased the car in 1986 as the remains of a Morris powered special built in the 1960’s in Melbourne. It has been rebuilt with Amilcar components. The engine is a 1925 pressure fed 1985cc side valve and drives through its original 4 speed transmission. [Read more…] about Vintage Collingrove Hillclimb, South Australia, 6 October

Australia’s Vintage Collingrove Hillclimb

October 14, 2014 By pete

Richard Creasy and the 1925 Amilcar takes on ‘The Wall’.

South Australia, 5 October 2014

Story and photos by Vince Johnson

The British far outnumbered the French and Italians at the Sporting Car Club of South Australia’s annual vintage hillclimb in the Barossa Valley recently. At just under 700 meters in length it doesn’t take long for competitors to get over the crest at the top and most managed seven runs during the day. Perfect spring weather and a holiday weekend saw the drivers almost as relaxed as the spectators. The entry list included some post-WW2 cars but the invited ‘Come & Run’ category maintained the vintage feel with Jim Scammell’s 1922 Essex 4 Special the oldest car on the hill. Targa Adelaide, South Australia

Targa Adelaide, South Australia, 21-25 August 2013

Story and Photos by Vince Johnson unless otherwise noted.

When Jason and John White’s Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera suffered differential problems on the second day of the Targa Adelaide, the chances of them repeating last year’s win were always going to be slim. Nissan driver Steve Glenney, with Bernie Webb navigating, put his knowledge of the South Australian hills roads to good use, taking the lead early and was never headed.

Australian Tour de Fleurieu

February 28, 2013 By pete

Late last year, Angus Mitchell, an Australian who owns a delightful Amilcar CGSs (above) thought it might be a worthy idea to put on a rally for Pre-1938 French cars with a wider scope of entry than just open to Amilcars. But would this work? How many of these rare museum pieces would actually show up? We’ll let Angus take it from here.

After I made the decision that I wanted to attract a wider range of interesting Vintage and Veteran cars to the beautiful surrounds of the Fleurieu Peninsula, I was very happy that a contingent of over 35 pre-1938 French vintage and veteran cars lined up to enter our Tour de Fleurieu event last November.

35 Pre War French cars assembled to participate in the Tour de Fleurieu.

The diversification proved to be a success with no less than 18 Amilcars, 5 Bugattis, 2 Salmsons, 3 Delages, a Le-Zebre, Hispano, Lorraine – Deitritch, Bedelia, Sizaire et Naudin, Hotchkiss and more. The owners of these wonderful machines agreed that it was great to see similar vehicles, from the same era together on the road. These are the sort of cars Museums die to get their hands on but these dedicated owners like to use them.
