Drivers at the Festival of Speed

July 21, 2025 By pete

Mario Andretti

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

Jonathan Sharp, and on occasion, Hugues Vanhoolandt, have been snapping happy faces at Goodwood for many, many years. One of our favorite years for faces was 2014, and we presented both the FOS and Revival drivers in our gallery.

More than 10 years later, the drivers are still smiling. Says Sharp, “I enjoy spending time in the assembly area as you can really feel the atmosphere, the drivers definitely enjoy it, and the mechanics are under far less pressure than they would be at a race meeting so do not seem to mind us getting in their way.

Jeff Allison: Head Shots Part 1

March 24, 2025 By pete

The author getting fancy with a self-portrait using the mirror of an open-wheel vintage racer at the Daily Express International Trophy at Silverstone, England on April 7, 1974.

Story and photos by Jeff Allison

I recently finished a project to put my “head shots” of drivers in one place and thought maybe the readers of VeloceToday might enjoy seeing some. I began photographing races in 1959 with my last “real” race, i.e., not vintage, in 1997. I didn’t take many “head shots” in my early years as I thought it was an affront to the drivers. However, as time went on, I loosened up (a telephoto lens helped) and began to photograph drivers as well as cars. Most were photos of opportunity while wandering the paddock and pits when I wasn’t out on the track.

Here are some of my favorites…

Drivers at the Goodwood FOS 2024

Tom Kristensen channels his inner Bernd Rosemeyer

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

Due to my inability to be at two places at once (I will work on that) I was not able to photograph every driver, but the following are a selection of those that I did manage to catch. And something we note, happily, every year, in most cases, the drivers are smiling, joking, relaxed and in a great mood. Such is the magic that is the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Miles of Smiles at Goodwood

Bentley Belles

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

Old faces and some new faces and everybody is smiling. But whilst every driver wants to win and drives accordingly, there are no points at stake or championships to be won, so the pressure is off and any rivalries are forgot. But you do get a nice cigar and a bottle of champagne when you win!

Goodwood Festival of Speed: Drivers

July 24, 2023 By pete

Derek Bell helps celebrate the 60 years of McLaren.

Photos by Jonathan Sharp

Familiar faces, new faces, young faces, and certainly some old faces. With this years Goodwood Festival of Speed (July 14-18) not just celebrating 75 years of Motor Racing at Goodwood but also the 60th anniversary of McLaren, 75 years of Porsche and the 100th anniversary of Le Mans. The bike guys from Moto GP were there and certainly plenty of well known and some not so well known (to me) faces to spot during what, unfortunately due to the weather, became a somewhat truncated and shortened weekend. Due to an inability to be at two places at once the following are those stars I managed to catch, for the ones I missed, sorry! We remind you that if you are in need of more information about any of the drivers below, highlight the name, go to Google, paste.

Goodwood 2022 Pit and Paddock

Ferrari’s Alfa Beater

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

Like many of us, I watched the various races streamed from Goodwood this year (favorite was the St. Mary’s Trophy). Obviously, nothing can beat the video coverage of Goodwood. At the same time I processed hundred of Jonathan’s still photos from Goodwood and prepared them for VeloceToday. Jonathan’s photos add a great deal to Goodwood coverage, aiding and abetting the video coverage, providing a depth and ambiance lacking in the brevity of video. We also hope that our readers are enlarging their screens to as much as 200 percent to better appreciate the many still photos; look large and linger long. –Ed.

I said to myself before the event “try not to take quite so many photos.” It is not the taking, it is the sorting that takes so much time. Anyway, Thursday afternoon at the cricket match, with reasonable control of my trigger finger, I took only about 88 shots, which is just about manageable. Friday morning early at the circuit I reminded myself to just shoot what you can use, stick to the French and Italian stuff! But it is just so photogenic that by 8.30am any chance of sticking to the script had gone out of the window. By close of play Sunday night a total of 3260 photos were taken!

Goodwood Revival: Drivers

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

The multiple joys of Goodwood; in addition to the practice sessions and the 16 races held over three days, the spectators could also enjoy a parade of in excess of 100 Austin Sevens each morning in celebration of the humble baby Austin’s centenary. A parade in commemoration of the late great Graham Hill, it being sixty years since he won his first Formula One World Championship, and a parade in celebration of 75 years of Ferrari.

Goodwood Driver’s Gallery

July 16, 2019 By pete

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

As is our custom with the Goodwood Festival of Speed, (this year held on July 6-7) we hung out in the paddock and photographed drivers as well as cars. There are few events where the young rising stars get to mingle with the older drivers and the atmosphere is always friendly.

It is probably my age but thank heavens the younger drivers have their names on the waist bands of the race suits as I would be struggling, like many other photographers of my age, to know who they are. [Read more…] about Goodwood Driver’s Gallery

Goodwood Revival, 2018: A Gallery

October 2, 2018 By pete

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

We present, a bit late perhaps, Jonathan Sharp’s view of this year’s Goodwood Revival. While his cohort Hugues Vanhoolandt did trackside photos, Jonathan concentrated on the people and the paddock area. Always so much to photograph, yet so little time and space. But enjoy, everyone below did!-Ed.

Goodwood Festival of Speed, 2018

July 31, 2018 By pete

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

I never had a chance to visit the Steering Wheel Club in London, or the Tip Top Bar in Monte Carlo, but I just wonder if maybe a little bit of the after-hours atmosphere found in those two old racing driver haunts is also present in the assembly area of the Festival of Speed, without the booze and grumpy waiter of course.

Monaco Historic Grand Prix by Vanhoolandt

May 29, 2018 By pete

Story and photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

Organized the first time in 1997, this year the Monaco Historic Grand Prix celebrated its 11th edition on May 12-13. Five Series (classes) covered the first 30 years of the Formula One World Championship, from 1950 to 1980. The two remaining Series were for the Pre-war Grand Prix cars and for front engine sports racing cars, in memory of the 1952 Monaco Grand Prix run for sports cars. Goodwood Festival of Speed Part One

Drivers at Goodwood, June 24-26 by Jonathan Sharp

James Martin is a famous British TV celebrity chef and a big petrol head. He is about to driver Jaguar D type XKD605 reg number 393RW, winner of the 1956 Reims 12 hour race.

Having managed to miss last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed due to illness, I was very keen not to miss this year’s event no matter what the weather. The prediction of rain proved to be very accurate especially on Thursday when during the afternoon the heavens opened and what was already a muddy site became in places a quagmire. Still this is England and rain will not stop play. [Read more…] about Goodwood Festival of Speed Part One
