The Short, Exciting Life of Ron Flockhart

July 3, 2023 By pete

Ron Flockhart the start of the 1957 Mille Miglia.

Story by David Ross

Jim Clark may have been Scotland’s first World Champion, but he was not Scotland’s first regular Grand Prix driver. Born in Edinburgh in 1923, Ron Flockhart was to become a contracted driver for the BRM Grand Prix team for whom he drove in nine races.

After school, he went on to Edinburgh University where he studied mechanical engineering and was one of the first to join the University Air Squadron. It was while he was there in 1940 that he came to know Hugh Langrishe, their shared interests in motor cycles, motor racing and aviation leading to them becoming firm friends.

Graham Gauld and the Motoring Aristocracy

April 17, 2018 By pete

Story by Graham Gauld

Throughout the history of European motor sport the aristocrats and the titled were the true pioneers, mainly because they were the only people who had the money to indulge in this new and gentlemanly sport. Many embraced racing with great enthusiasm.

A number of them were Scots and since that is a topic dear to my heart, I would like to tell you the stories of three of them who were as different as chalk and cheese, from three distinctly different eras of motorsport.

A visit back to my hometown of Edinburgh always brings back a series of memories from the days when David Murray first started the successful Ecurie Ecosse team, to the early racing days of Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart and Dario Franchitti. [Read more…] about Graham Gauld, Edinburgh and Nostalgia

Gauld on the Ecurie Ecosse Transporter

Ecurie Ecosse transporter

Brand new, the Ecurie Ecosse Transporter arrives at Silverstone in 1960 with a brace of D-type Jaguars on top.

Story and photos by Graham Gauld

Throughout the years, racing cars have been dragged to race meetings all over the World in different forms of transport. Today nearly every paddock for an International or National series sees a polished line of modern trucks. However, it was not always this way; when the Scottish racing team Ecurie Ecosse started out in 1952 the drivers initially drove their Jaguar XK120’s to and from the local circuits and then used a 1932 Leyland for circuits further away.
