The 1960 edition of the Sebring 12 Hours was scheduled to start at 10 AM Saturday, March 26. But competition actually began a day earlier. The Ferraris of Ed Hugus Part 2

Hugus teamed with George Reed to take the prototype 250GTO to eighth overall at Le Mans in 1962.

At Le Mans in 1961, Hugus got a ride in an OSCA, (S/N 1001 Tipo S) driving with David Cunningham (no relation to Briggs) but retired early. Back in the prancing horse saddle in September, he drove another Ferrari, the 250 TR59/60, serial number 0770TR 59, which had already been home to Hill, Gendebien, Gurney, Allison, von Trips, Ginther and Rodriguez. By 1961, the car had passed to George Reed, another Ferrari privateer, and the pair took the warhorse to second place at the Elkhart Lake 500.

Pittsburgh, 1956. On the back of the photo, Hugus wrote, “Chet Flynn bought this 4.1 Mexico from Chinetti, I believe it was the one Luigi drove in the Carrera. (probably S/N 0224AT, Ed.) I bought it from Chet, and drove it from New York to Pittsburgh. I drove it quite a bit to the races but never actually raced it.”

The Ed Hugus Ferraris 1961-65

The new book about Ed Hugus is a fine effort (order here) but concentrates on the Cobra interlude. Being a magazine devoted to Italian cars, we thought it might be nice to see what Ed did with the various Ferraris he drove over his career and these articles is based on a series of interviews with Ed Hugus in 2003 by the Editor and the article was originally published in Forza Magazine, June 2004. Part 1 appeared last week, and this week we conclude with Part 2

Ed Hugus drove Alfas, Porsches, BMWs, Lotus, Ferraris and Coopers over his 15-year career as a race car driver. He also drove a Cobra at Le Mans in 1963, where it retired.

So one might wonder why his biography is entitled Cobra Pilote; the Ed Hugus Story. Probably because the author, who once lived close to Hugus and became a close confidant, is enamored with Cobras, and no doubt wanted make sure Ed gets the credit for being the first one to install a V8 into a production Cobra. In fact as Robert D. Walker tells us, Ed’s shop actually created about six or seven of the first Cobras, taking in the A.C. bodies from the UK and installing the Ford 260.
