French engines dominate at Bahrain

Four races. Four drivers. Four constructors. Racing “F1 wise” seems to be improving. The drivers love it, the fans love it, and it’s great for racing in general.

Australian Grand Prix 2012

VeloceToday readers are already familiar with the work of Andrew Coles (see Fiat Nationals, Australia). Coles attended the first round of the F1 World Championship at Melbourne and filed this report for VeloceToday.

Story and Photos by Andrew Coles and Ferrari Media

Formula 1 has always been the holy grail of motorsport. It doesn’t matter if you’re a driver, an engineer, an official or even just a spectator, the FIA’s premiere category has an attraction that no true motor racing fan can deny. It was this magnetic-like pull that brought me to Melbourne for the opening round of the 2012 season. Being there live is a world class experience. No matter how many cameras are used to televise the event, no TV coverage can match. In many respects, TV does a very poor job of portraying what actually makes Formula 1 so special.

Indian Grand Prix 2011: Bully for Formula One

Bully for India and Formula One

One of our more illustrious Presidents, Teddy Roosevelt, was a member of the Bull Moose Party and was given to using the word “Bully” in a positive manner, as in meaning “good”, “great” or “excellent”. Roosevelt also coined the term “Bully Pulpit”, which has an additional meaning here—the “Bully Pulpit” being the ability of the President to use his ‘pulpit’ in an influential manner. And a pulpit is what we have here, what you are reading; a podium, a platform, an opportunity to speak our mind and to have thousands hear it or read it.

The event at Spa held no major surprises in that the Red Bull duo of Vettel and Webber made short shrift of the competition. Although Webber made what has become a normal start for him and faltered, losing about five positions while Nico Rosberg surprised everyone by rocketing past Vettel into a lead that didn’t last.

Pirelli Wins

Like most of the F1 events this year, Hungary was a race of tires, or choices thereof. Give a team enough choices and fifty percent of the time they will screw it up. For McLaren, it was German GP winner Hamilton whose handlers opted for the wrong options. Also for McLaren, it was Jenson Button’s team who got the combination right and went on to win. Simple as that. Hamilton had to settle for fourth after a drive-through penalty.

Ferrari Finds Speed, Finally
Grand Prix of Britain

Fernando Alonso did his best to convince everyone that he was worth every Euro the scuderia is throwing at him and brought Ferrari their first victory of the 2011 season in a typically damp British Grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel led during the first half of the race, getting the jump on his pole sitting team mate, causing groans of “not again” from the dignified fans and more guttural shouts of “che cazzo” from tifosi. But the result was enough to put Red Bull on notice that the last ten races will not be a cake walk. Hopefully.

Turkish Grand Prix

The start of the Turkish Grand Prix.

Several years ago, Ferrari fans were perfectly happy with routines. Michael Schumacher would have a flawless qualifying session, have an uneventful race and cross the line with a gap to second place that could occasionally be measured with a calendar, rather than a stop watch. But should the same type of performance happen from another driver and team combination, the talk quickly changes to how F1 has lost its magic and it is more about the money than the show. It was about the money back then, too, but one didn’t feel like a complete futz for spending $30 for a coffee cup with the scudetto on the side of it when your team was winning.

Singapore has tried branding itself as the Monaco of the east.  I’ll give them credit for creating something special. But, with strict laws and not nearly the same quantity of vulgar, rich Russians, it’s not going to be an exact copy.  But what they have managed to do is create a show, and that’s what this sport is all about. In spite of my last article, McLaren tried to prove that it wasn’t just Red Bull’s ability to take their own cars out of contention that would lead to a desired result for the Woking based team, but that they could do it all on their own.  It was Hamilton’s race to lose, and between driving a clean race and having the team’s flawless pit stops, he made it look easy.  [Read more…] about Canadian Grand Prix

It may not have been a pretty finish, or one that will go down in the record books as a great performance, but Jenson Button’s fifth place finish in the suburbs of Sao Paulo was enough to clinch the 2009 Driver’s Championship. [Read more…] about Brazilian Grand Prix
