Robert Pauley: engineer, photographer, enthusiast, author

Over the years, we have featured the work of Robert F. Pauley. His color photography has graced our newsletter leads, and enhanced many articles. His contributions to VeloceToday began in 2011 when published a series of articles about “Gilda,” the 1955 Ghia showcar designed by the Italian Giovanni Savonuzzi. This prompted an email response from Pauley, who told me a remarkable story about working with the famous designer while both were employed at the Engineering Building in Chrysler’s Headquarters in Highland Park, Michigan. It was the beginning of a long, fruitful relationship.

Vignale History Part 3: The Good Years and Maserati

February 23, 2016 By pete

bagde-final As we have seen in Part 2, about 156 Vignale Ferrari bodies were built, and after 1954 Vignale gradually stopped producing bodies for Ferrari and instead concentrated on the new Maserati 3500 as Ferrari teamed up with Pinin Farina for a new line of Ferraris.
Vignale would quickly win over the Orsis at Maserati, helping establish the 3500 as a serious contender to the Pinin Farina designed Ferrari 250GT series. And by the time it was over, Vignale produced over 2,400 bodies for Maserati. Despite the loss of Ferrari, Vignale had some very good years to come before his untimely death.

The Good Years

In some respects, Alfredo Vignale was much like Ferrari. He had humble beginnings and like Ferrari relished in having total control of his growing enterprise. He traveled rarely, and according to his brother, never set foot in Maranello.

(Vignale) Ferrari Beaters

July 27, 2011 By pete

A personal account by Eric Davison
With thanks to Marcel Massini and Richard F. Merritt

The recent story by Wallace Wyss about Ferrari ‘beaters’ (The Joy of Beater Ferraris) brought back a memory about a time when there were even Vignale Ferraris that were beaters, although that pejorative had not yet been used in conjunction with automobiles.

Unlike today when the name Ferrari evokes dollar signs and the older the Ferrari the more dollar signs, in the late 50s and early 60s an old Ferrari sports racing car was just a tired old piece of outdated aluminum that had outlived its competitive life having been surpassed by the latest model.

But, there were people who had an inkling of what was to come. One such man was a gentleman named Herb Armstrong. Herb was employed by Chrysler International and was headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. [Read more…] about (Vignale) Ferrari Beaters
