What Size Hope for F1 2010?

March 31, 2010 By pete

Button's high sign. Another good year for the Brit? Courtesy Planet F1.

After the boring “Dustbowl” of Bahrain, the thrilling “Fireworks” of Australia. There’s big Hope for 2010.

By Philippe Defechereux

We’re now really off to the races.

The pre-season was highly exciting, with all those new teams, and the many driver switches –Jenson Button to McLaren and Alsonso to Ferrari being the top examples and, of course, the return of “Der Kaiser” (Schumi) after a three-year absence, but this time with Mercedes-Benz.

Todd Morici and Peter Giddings were the first two drivers to be named “Grand Masters” in the Ferrari Historic Challenge, reflecting their multiple wins and championships. At the 2010 Cavallino Classic the pair proved they’ve lost none of their skills, as each was an overall winner in the event’s Historic Races. [Read more…] about Cavallino Classic Historics

Story and photos by Alessandro Gerelli

The Bonhams London auction on December 7th included about 80 cars and a great deal of memorabilia, with many books and magazines coming from the collection of George Horne. The cars were mostly English but there were a few Italian and three very rare French cars on the block.

German Grand Prix

A podium finish for Massa and Ferrari, but is that all there is?

Tides are Turning
Grand Prix of Germany

The one constant in F1 is change. At each and every race, every team brings new improvements to their cars. Most of the changes are aerodynamic with super computer simulations and thousands of hours of wind tunnel testing to have this element exactly this shape, this size and this angle to maximize performance and fit within the rules.

Red Bull’s second

Sebastian Vettel made the most of his pole position and dominated this week’s British Grand Prix. The young German blew away the competition and brought his Red Bull Racing car home to finish 1-2, setting Brawn GP on notice that the performance gap has been closed.

Where are the fans?

It never fails. The race that immediately follows the glitz and glamour of Monaco never seems to live up to the same standard or reputation. Turkey had the honor this year and it seemed like Jenson Button had a good time, but all is not well in F1 right now. Rumors abounded up and down the pit lane that the powers that be actually requested a couple of cameras be turned off during the race, lest someone actually realize that the stands were as empty as they are in Daytona at 2 AM during the 24 hour race, in the rain.

Bountiful Berlinettas: Mille Miglia 2009 PI

June 4, 2009 By Gerelli

Did Ferrari coin the term “berlinetta”? If not, he certainly created many cars that defined the word. Here is perhaps the greatest berlinetta of all, 0026M, a 195 MM Ferrari driven to victory in the 1950 Mille Miglia.

This year, our photographer thought it might be interesting to concentrate his efforts on the Italian berlinettas which are so prevalent at this event. We thought so too, and decided write an etymology of the term “berlinetta” as applied to Italian two position coupes.

Part I will cover Alfa through Ferrari, Part II, Fiat through Siata.

In 1987, in an introduction to the book “Berlinettas: Classic coupes of yesterday and today”, Sergio Pininfarina wrote: “When Enzo Ferrari invented the word ‘Berlinetta’ to designate his Coupes, he meant to emphasize a particular set of qualities.” [sic]

Bountiful Berlinettas: Mille Miglia 2009 PII

June 4, 2009 By Gerelli

Hot on the tail of Alfa, Ferrari and Lancia, Fiat did their berlinetta act on the 1100, culminating in the 1947 1100S Mille Miglia model. It in turn was preceded by the absolutely berlinetta 1935 Balilla 508S.

In this part, Alessandro Gerelli brings us the Mille Miglia berlinettas from Fiat to Siata. As we have related in Part I, Enzo Ferrari was implicated in the birth of the term berlinetta. But was this so, and if so, how?

Riding with Paul Frere in Ferrari’s F50 at Pista di Fiorano. Notice the side load on the front tire and the lean in the body.

A CONTINUING EDUCATION

A lap of Pista di Fiorano, Ferrari’s on-site testing facility for all production and F1 cars, lived in my head. My first laps there were in a 328GTB. I returned to experience the first Testarossa and again for the 512TR. Then, on the fiftieth anniversary of the marque we were given the opportunity to try the F50. Button Wins in Downpour Malaysian Grand Prix

I really do prefer when there is a race to write about, but
unfortunately, the powers that be decided to schedule the Malaysian Grand Prix early in the season, when we know that there is an even chance with Silverstone that it is going to rain.

The weather is like the economy, grey and depressing, but the gloom soon lifts as we see that everyone present is happy to see friends whom they haven’t since last years’ Amelia Concours or Pebble Beach. Events like Amelia are as much about friends as they are about cars.

There were few Ferraris at Retro this year, some well known cars of the Ferrari Historic Challenge prepared by Roelofs Engineering, a 250 LM, a 500 F2 and a brace of production cars, but perhaps more interesting was the concentration on the Significant Others.
