Vanhoolandt at Retromobile, Part 1

February 12, 2024 By pete

Germain Lambert is one of those French craftsmen who distinguished themselves until the beginning of the post-war period by building sophisticated cars for the time. He built around 60 cars including this 1951 Cabriolet Sport with Ruby engine at the wheel of which Lambert himself won the 1100 Sport category at the 1953 Bol d’Or.

The Linas-Montlhéry Autodrome, near Paris, celebrates its centenary at Rétromobile, 2024.

At the end of the First World War, the question arose as to where and when France would have its first permanent automobile circuit. The answer came in 1924 when an industrialist named Alexandre Lamblin began building a speedway in Montlhéry, south of Paris, which had one astonishing characteristic: in places, its banking was too steep to stand upright on. A 12 kilometer road circuit was quickly added to the speed ring, which would become a favorite with French manufacturers and drivers.

Automedon 2018

October 23, 2018 By pete

Photos by Alessandro Gerelli

This is the sixth consecutive year Alessandro Gerelli has covered this event for VeloceToday, and each year he brings us cars rarely seen anywhere else in the world. For this reason, it is one of the editor’s favorite car shows; you will never be bored here or see the same cars over and over again. Indeed, it is often a guessing game for us. For example, this year Alessandro photographed three special bodied Traction Avant 11s; we ask our readers to help identify each one. [Read more…] about Automedon 2018

Graham Gauld at Silverstone

August 8, 2017 By pete

The car that caught my eye was this monster French Hotchkiss. Photo by Jonathan Sharp.

Story by Graham Gauld

You would think that after spending three and a half days at the Silverstone Classic, I would come up with a host of stories. But this year, I must confess, it was tough. This is not because there were no interesting cars; but I had arranged in advance various meetings with people who had written asking for help with books or articles they are writing, plus the usual problem of getting round the paddock without someone diverting my attention.

Australian Tour de Fleurieu

February 28, 2013 By pete

Late last year, Angus Mitchell, an Australian who owns a delightful Amilcar CGSs (above) thought it might be a worthy idea to put on a rally for Pre-1938 French cars with a wider scope of entry than just open to Amilcars. But would this work? How many of these rare museum pieces would actually show up? We’ll let Angus take it from here.

After I made the decision that I wanted to attract a wider range of interesting Vintage and Veteran cars to the beautiful surrounds of the Fleurieu Peninsula, I was very happy that a contingent of over 35 pre-1938 French vintage and veteran cars lined up to enter our Tour de Fleurieu event last November.

35 Pre War French cars assembled to participate in the Tour de Fleurieu.

The diversification proved to be a success with no less than 18 Amilcars, 5 Bugattis, 2 Salmsons, 3 Delages, a Le-Zebre, Hispano, Lorraine – Deitritch, Bedelia, Sizaire et Naudin, Hotchkiss and more. The owners of these wonderful machines agreed that it was great to see similar vehicles, from the same era together on the road. These are the sort of cars Museums die to get their hands on but these dedicated owners like to use them.
