Now here is a conundrum. A bestselling, highly praised (winner of The Grand Prix for the Most Beautiful Book in 2017) book has sold out despite a terrifying price tag. Joy abounds, cash registers jingle. A second edition should be printed immediately!

But wait, it seems that a number of people, some probably on a diminishing Social Security, some perhaps students of art and engineering, complained that such a work was only accessible for the very rich. This 9 x 12 book from Italy and published in English by Dalton Watson might seem like another potboiler-coffee-table-color-photo-exercise, but it is several rungs up the ladder from that. First, the author and photographer have, as the title implies, focused on Italian coupes built from 1947 to 1962. Why they excluded spiders is a good question, but by narrowing it down to the coupes, it better shows the Italian genius of the era. Ercole Spada: If the name does not ring a bell, it should and it is high time Zagato’s most important designer be given credit, in this case a long-overdue book. Appropriately entitled Spada: The long story of a short tail by Belgian Bart Lenaerts and his team at WAFT Publishing, it is stylishly produced with the cooperation of Ercole Spada himself, along with his son Paolo. Even more stylistic is a limited edition version of 150 books with an aluminum casing, signed by Ercole Spada, priced at 350 Euros. Both versions are in English only.
