Italian Car Day, Brooklands 2024

Fiat 2300 Ghia, behind which is BAC 1/11 G-ASYD. Throughout its 29-year flying career SYD was used as a test aircraft for various variants and for testing technical equipment including ‘Fly by Light Control Technology.’ Donated to the museum by British Aerospace Airbus Ltd and landing at Brooklands (her 5004th landing) on the 14th July 1994.

“Just follow the F40!” Not something I have said before but when my pal asked me which junction we needed to exit the motorway, it sounded so much better than “this one.” The F40 had just passed us, by the way, and it was obvious that we were both heading to the same event. Driving the Wild Miura S

Paying attention to the Miura, circa 1973. Wright’s students are getting a good education.

Last week we did a story about a drive with Paul Wilson in his Miura and noted the lack of interest the car elicited as we drove around. But that was not the case, says John Wright, back in 1973 when his students got a chance to see a Miura up close. Wright also finagled a drive in the ‘beast’ so do read on….Ed.

For three years, I taught in Toronto at a school called Thornhill Collegiate, just north of Toronto. Because I was racing a Formula Vee at the time and had an interest in cars, the head of the Technical Department asked me to be a staff sponsor for a school autosports club. We would meet regularly, and I would sign out films from various sources like Labatts or Players on racing or rallying and show them in my classroom after school was over. The club would also organize various events like driving skill contests and gymkhanas. We would also participate in local fun rallies organized by the Deutsche Automobile Club in which I had a membership. You can’t help but like Daniele Audetto, the tall, urbane Italian who has been involved in international motor sport all of his life. Earlier this year when I saw him at his villa in Bordighera on the Italian Riviera, he and his wife were about to head off for Spain where he has been working with Hispania Racing in Formula 1. He was not sure what his role would be this year following the take-over of the team by Thesan Capital, a Madrid based investment Group, but he didn’t appear too concerned about it.

If the movie hero “Rambo” were real and John Rambo ever bought an Italian sports car..this would be it.

If ever there was a totally useless car…on the other hand, think if you were an Arab Sheik, with nothing but sand in the distance in all directions and you hear that a hostile army is coming your way, then you would want a Lamborghini LM002.

After all, it can cruise at 120 mph.

Over sand.

No wonder it got the nickname “Lambo Rambo.”

Cross Country Miura

Guy Anderson is a famous exotic car dealer from the South who has identified himself with some of the most exciting cars including Ferrari, Lamborghini and the Cobra. Along the way he has had many adventures, some of which were harrowing at the time but are a good laugh now. He shared one story after being prodded by VT contributor Wallace Wyss

This tale begins with the purchase of a pair of Miuras. One was a 1966 P400 that was painted in white with red and blue accents. The slats, eyelashes, rockers, bumpers and grills were painted in either red or blue. It was bizarre to look at, kind of a “beater”. The second car was a pale blue 1969 “S” with the paint being considered flat, not very glossy.

Both cars were the property of a man who advertised them in www.motors.co.uk.. When I saw the ad I immediately called the owner and struck up a deal to purchase the pair. I sent him a deposit and prepared to venture to Lake Tahoe to drive both the cars back to Atlanta, Georgia, a distance of approximately 2,500 miles.

The early P400 was running but the brakes did not work. The S would start but was popping and skipping “BAD” according to the owner.

The pictures of the cars arrived, but since the pictures were Polaroid shots, you couldn’t see anything but a faint blue and faint white silhouette of the Miuras sitting in a garage. After deliberating what tools and parts were needed to take, we decided on brake parts, alternator belts, points, plugs and a roll of high tension copper-core, spark plug wire and some spark plug ends. This week Crane recalls driving the 1980’s version of the Alfa 2.9, the Countach. Both were the ultimate in shock and awe of their eras.

The story is often told that as the Lamborghini prototype was completed at Sant’Agata Bolognese, a workman stood back and exclaimed, “Countach!”— which, in Piedmontese means, “Geez, that’s neat!” only much more so. The design team looked at each other and immediately agreed that this one car wearing the famous badge would not be named after a fighting bull.
