Gauld and the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally

December 11, 2023 By pete

Story and photos by Graham Gauld

During the 1960s there was an increased interest in International rallying to boost production car sales. Consequently, we saw a number of interesting race cars appearing from time to time in the bigger events. I was reminded of this recently when someone raised the question of Ferraris taking part in International Rallies but for me one of the most spectacular and successful performances came in the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally when Porsche entered one of their successful Porsche 904 Carrera GTS cars that had been raced for the first time a year earlier at the Sebring 12 Hour race.

On the tarmac, ice and snow of the French Alps, the new Abarth 124 Rally, driven by three private crews, demonstrated its competitiveness and excellent performance. Last weekend the Abarth 124 rally enjoyed a promising debut in the Monte Carlo Rally, the first event of the World Rally Championship. In South America, the Fiat Panda finished well in the Dakar rally. [Read more…] about Fiat Abarth Hope for Successful Rally Season

The new Abarth 124 Rally to debut in the 85th Monte Carlo Rally

The racing career of the new Abarth 124 Rally will start with the debut in the 85th Monte Carlo Rally, the first race of the 2017 Rally World Championship to be staged this weekend, from January 19 to 22. And as the lead photo indicates, Abarth will try to recreate the success of the original Fiat Abarth 124 Rally. And of course therein lies a story we can sink our teeth into.

We hit the reference books for information; in this case, our own Abarth Buyer’s Guide, from which we quote here liberally. Seems that Carlo Abarth wasn’t too keen on rally cars and only prepared two models in the early 1960s for rally events. In 1962 a team of Fiat 1500S Rally Berlinas was readied for the Trieste Rally but as they did not fare well, Abarth lost interest. In 1963 Abarth entered the Monte Carlo Rally with 850 and 1000 TC Berlinas, but it was the day of the front drive Minis and Saabs; Abarth & C. did not pursue. Ice, Snow, Renault R8s, Alpines, Lancia Fulvias and Gauld

In which Gauld recalls his favorite Winter Rallies
Story and photos by Graham Gauld or courtesy thereof

The legendary Monte Carlo Rally finished last Saturday, but lost a lot of its fascination because there was precious little snow. Winter rallies should have snow, which differentiates them from other rally championship events.

All this got me thinking of my favorite snow rally, the International Swedish event that takes place in February and, being located over 2000 kms north of Monte Carlo, can usually provide plenty of the white stuff. I covered the Swedish Rally four times, the first time in 1966 by persuading Henry Manney III that we had had enough covering the Monte three years running. Why don’t we do something different I asked, and from the moment we landed in Gothenburg and set out on our 120 mile north into Varmland and the town of Orebro it truly was different!

After two months of waiting the 2012 season began but everything looks the same; Loeb and Citroen DS3 laid down the law, and dominated the Monte Carlo rally.

The season of World Rally Championship got underway on a beautiful sunny day and in contention were three World Rally Cars: Ford Fiesta RS, Mini John Cooper and Citroen DS3.

This year, Peugeot badly wanted to win the centenary Monte, and they succeeded! The 2011 Rallye Monte-Carlo was won by Bouffier/Panseri at the wheel of the 207 S2000.

After the first stage, the 207 S2000 and the Peugeot France driver controlled the rally and went on to take the win.

“At the beginning, I wasn’t the fastest driver on this rally which was never easy. This is the best win of my career,” said Bryan Bouffier. “I wonder whether I will ever experience anything like this again. Winning the Monte Carlo is magic!”

Elitch on Alpines

By Brandy Elitch

Dieppe is a small French port on the English Channel, more famous for its scallops than for its links to the automobile industry (although pre-WWI, the French Grand Prix was held there).
